Your Role in the Mission

Type One Energy is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Model Based Systems and Simulation Engineer to join our team working on the exciting development of a next-generation stellarator fusion energy plant. This role is critical to our mission of creating a cost-effective and commercially viable fusion energy solution.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive digital design tools for our stellarator plant, including a system design model.
  • Work closely with physicists and engineers to provide visibility into the complex interactions within the stellarator system and its subsystems.
  • Develop and maintain system models, creating a detailed, multi-domain system model of the stellarator plant using MBSE methodologies and tools (e.g., SysML, Cameo Systems Modeler, MDAO frameworks, PROCESS, Bluemira).
  • Integrate plant models with physics systems (magnetic confinement, heating, current drive, diagnostics) and engineering systems (vacuum vessel, magnets, cryogenics, power systems, cooling, tritium handling, remote handling) and plant support systems.
  • Utilize integrated plant models to investigate the impact of components on overall plant performance from a RAMI perspective.
  • Integrate cost models and economic analysis into the system model to understand cost drivers and perform trade studies.
  • Develop and maintain integrated systems codes in Python or equivalent.
  • Ensure model consistency, traceability, and adherence to MBSE best practices.
  • Document model architecture, assumptions, and validation results.
  • Digitally link requirements, plant design geometry, operational concepts, and physics predictions.
  • Explore different plant architectures and design options using the system models.
  • Conduct trade studies and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the impact of design choices on performance, cost, and risk.
  • Support the development of system and subsystem specifications based on model insights.
  • Use the model to support risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
  • Work closely with the finance team to integrate cost models into the system model.
  • Work closely with physicists, engineers, business teams to gather input, validate models, and communicate results.
  • Present model findings and recommendations to technical and management audiences and participate in design reviews.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the design stage of complex projects, exploring design trade-offs.
  • Proven experience in developing and applying system models for complex engineering systems.
  • Experience with integration between engineering modeling and simulation tools, either with custom solutions or commercial tools such as Phoenix Model Center or SIMULIA Process Composer.
  • Basic programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for model automation and data analysis.
  • Skills with transforming between different data representations and formats (e.g., property graphs, different geometry formats).
  • Experience with simulation and analysis tools relevant to complex systems (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Modelica).
  • Experience with Fusion Specific tools (e.g., Process, Bluemira) preferred but not required.
  • Experience with cost modeling and analysis preferred but not required.
Benefits
  • Stock and share options
  • Relocation allowance
  • Insurance plans
  • 401(k) retirement options
  • And many more voluntary benefits
