Job Description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Civil Engineer - Roadway Design to support our Transportation Team. This position sits out of our Knoxville, TN office, with the possibility of working from our Nashville/Brentwood, TN office.

The candidate would lead project tasks or assist project managers with project coordination and collaboration efforts for various transportation engineering projects in both the public and private sectors. Tasks may include assistance with the research, conceptual development, design, and constructability of roads, drainage systems, ITS, and bridges. Other tasks may include generating accurate and concise training and workflow documentation regarding standardized design software and specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Perform professional civil engineering work which includes development of 3D design models, calculations, sketches, plans, and estimates for various transportation improvement projects, including new/widened roadways, intersection improvements, bike and pedestrian facilities.
  • Analyze data from surveys, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Assist with the development of technologies, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future‑ready solutions with civil engineering design standards.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site and provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures that align with company policy.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations, that include summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist technical staff with writing/reviewing design training manuals and workflow documentation to further advance the engineering industry.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with design concepts, construction, mitigation and improvement activities, and remediation projects.
  • Assist with inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Assist with preparation of technical proposals, scoping, and labor estimates.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi‑discipline team of engineers to execute project work on various projects.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
  • Interface with clients as needed and support business development initiatives.
  • Regularly coordinate and communicate with project teams, manager, and civil team. Attend and participate in project team meetings.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering discipline and prior civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Proficiency in Micro Station and Open Roads Designer software; familiarity with TDOT Design Guidelines and Standards.
  • Experience with design teams on TDOT and municipal projects (highway, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design).
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work‑related issues, plus desire to learn new technologies.
