Position
The College of Education Health and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) seeks a visionary strategically-oriented individual to serve as professor and head of the newly formed Department of Nutrition and Public Health Sciences. The department desires a leader who will :
- Lead the department in developing a vision and mission in alignment with the University and College's vision and strategic plans;
- Lead the department in ways that create a positive collegial culture that honors all;
- Recruit, retain and develop staff and faculty and allocate resources accordingly;
- Increase enrollment and innovative programming;
- Support faculty in conducting high-quality research in their academic fields;
- Support faculty in seeking external funding for their research;
- Support faculty and staff in community-engaged work;
- Advocate for and promote the work of the department and its programs;
- Advocate for collaborative problem solving and shared governance;
- Manage personnel resources and the new departmental budget; and
- Serve the College and University in supporting its mission.
Located within a few hours of major urban centers including Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville and near the beautiful Smoky Mountains, the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) was founded in 1794 and is one of the oldest public universities in the country. UTK is a vibrant and diverse urban campus located in the heart of Knoxville. The Department of Nutrition and Public Health Sciences (NPHS) offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nutrition and Public Health. The undergraduate degree programs in Nutrition include a Bachelor of Science (BS) in one of three concentrations Biomedical Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition and Dietetics. The Dietetics concentration is an accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) through the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
Each of these concentrations offers an accelerated combined Bachelors / Masters Program which allows qualified students to complete both a bachelors and masters degree in five years. Additionally the department offers two undergraduate minors Nutrition and Nutrition and Physical Activity for Health. At the graduate level the department offers Master of Science (MS) degrees in Biomedical Nutrition Science, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and Community Nutrition.
The MS in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics is accredited by ACEND and prepares students to become registered dietitian / nutritionists. Doctoral degrees are offered in Biomedical Nutrition Science and Community Nutrition concentrations. Graduate program minors are offered in Biomedical Nutrition Science and Community Nutrition and a graduate certificate program is offered in Community Nutrition.
NPHS also offers Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) with a Population Health Sciences concentration, a Public Health minor and an accelerated program that allows qualified students (with a Public Health major or minor) to complete a Master of Public Health (MPH) in one additional year. Additionally the university is also developing a fully online BSPH program to expand access to undergraduate public health education.
The MPH is available on campus and online with concentrations in community health education epidemiology health policy and management public health nutrition and veterinary public health with opportunities for a dual degree (DVM / MPH) and graduate minors in Statistics and in Epidemiology. The Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health Sciences prepares students with advanced research and communication skills to develop evidence-based strategies for addressing public health challenges.
All of these programs are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
Applicants should have the following qualifications :
- Earned doctorate in a relevant area of study (e.g. public health nutrition or related area);
- Previously earned tenure in a higher education institution;
- Qualified for the rank of professor;
- Demonstrated commitment to access and engagement;
- Record of significant accomplishments in research;
- An excellent record of teaching and mentoring;
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
- Experience with fiscal management.
- Experience with strategic planning;
- Demonstrated experience with external funding;
- Capability to guide faculty in all aspects of externally-funded scholarship including basic scientists;
- Knowledge of state-of-art PhD programs in Nutrition, Public Health and related fields;
- History of outreach and engagement;
