Position Summary:

The Radiation Therapist II is an experienced radiation therapist providing accurate radiation treatment to patients as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. The role involves developing positive, trusting, caring, and professional relationships with patients and coworkers. Responsible for administering therapeutic radiation to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients under supervision of the radiation oncology team, including acting as primary therapist, independently completing complex tasks, and training new or less experienced RTs.

Enhances departmental operations through respectful and positive communication, using independent judgment to maintain high standards of patient care efficiently and compassionately.

Responsibilities
  • Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and patient identification for accuracy prior to treatment.
  • Work with the radiation oncology team to prepare and construct equipment such as immobilization devices, treatment tools, and protection devices for consistent patient positioning.
  • When working with another therapist, act as a safety and quality double check.
  • Position patients accurately for treatment, utilizing treatment devices as prescribed.
  • Administer prescribed radiation doses to target areas using appropriate equipment and standards.
  • Perform safety and quality checks on radiation therapy equipment, communicate issues effectively.
  • Educate and reassure patients and families, answer questions, and provide physical assistance.
  • Enter accurate patient data into equipment, set controls, and regulate dosage.
  • Monitor and report patient reactions and concerns during and after treatment.
  • Follow radiation protection principles for safety.
  • Analyze and correct patient setup issues.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and patient-related problems, escalate as needed.
  • Maintain treatment schedules, communicate delays or changes to patients.
  • Keep accurate, timely records of treatments, dosages, and patient reactions.
  • Work independently within scope, prioritize tasks, and respond to emergencies.
  • Communicate professionally in writing and speaking.
  • Maintain treatment rooms and equipment supplies.
  • Participate in quality improvement and professional development activities.
  • Train and supervise Radiation Therapy students or new hires.
  • Review simulation and treatment charges for accuracy.
  • Act as treatment room lead for SBRT and pediatric sedation treatments.
  • Administer IV contrast for CT simulations safely.
  • Collaborate with medical physics and engineers for daily machine QA and patient-specific QA.
  • Follow safety policies, complete education requirements, and participate in improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Education: None specified; must meet standards for license and/or certification requirements.

Minimum Experience: At least two (2) years of experience as a Certified Radiation Therapist, with demonstrated ability to perform the required tasks and promote to Radiation Therapist II.

Licensure Requirement: Maintain ARRT (T) and CPR certifications. CPR required.
