College of Veterinary Medicine – UTIA
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, this position maintains the quality and efficiency of the Diagnostic Endocrinology Service. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting routine hormone analysis on clinical specimens, assisting with specimen accessioning, performing general laboratory tasks, adhering to safety procedures, maintaining client confidentiality, and providing customer service.
Responsibilities- Sets-up and performs hormone assays on clinical specimens
- Assures quality control by assessing assay performance
- Reviews and transcribes results
- Operates standard laboratory equipment and specialized equipment used in hormone analysis
- Participates in general laboratory safety training and specialized radiation safety training
- Ensures safety protocols are followed
- Receives, organizes, and accessions specimens for diagnostic testing
- Processes specimens for diagnostic analysis
- Prepares specimens for delivery to external laboratories for analyte analysis
- Interacts with veterinarians, technicians, students, and pet owners concerning test protocols, submission of specimens, and results
- Maintains client confidentiality of test results
- Ensures clients receive results in a timely manner
- Restocks supplies
- Disposes of biohazard by properly containing, labeling, and delivering to external biohazard area
- Documents receipt of radioactive assay kits and properly stores reagents
- Assists with maintaining chemical inventories
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of laboratory
The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.
Qualifications- Minimum Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or another laboratory science. - Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures.
- 2 years of relevant experience (Laboratory Technologist 2 level).
- 4 years of relevant experience (Senior Laboratory Technologist 1 level).
- 6 years of relevant experience (Senior Laboratory Technologist 2 level).
- Fundamental knowledge of laboratory safety and techniques, including working with biohazardous and radioactive materials.
- Knowledge of how to properly use and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Skilled in various computer programs, such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft 365, VistA (hospital computer system).
- Ability to follow instructions and protocols precisely.
- Knowledge of radioimmunoassays preferred.
