The Archaeological Field Director is responsible for leading and supervising field crews in the completion of archaeological surveys. The Field Director will participate in planning and mobilization of projects, systematic recording of archaeological sites, and preparation of materials for report production following completion of the project.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Maintain both North Wind and project‑specific safety awareness and practices including but not limited to field crew and driving safety.
- Oversee and direct crews in the location, recording, and interpretation of archaeological data from survey projects.
- Supervise field personnel, which may include in‑field training, problem resolution, and performance evaluation.
- Organize fieldwork mobilization and demobilization.
- Ensure completion of projects on schedule and within budget.
- Identify archaeological sites including artifacts and features.
- Collect data at archaeological and historic sites.
- Take photographs of archaeological sites, artifacts, features, and standing structures.
- Keep meticulous and precise notes on archaeological sites.
- Collect GIS data.
- Conduct quality control of field data collected.
- Develop survey strategy on a daily basis.
- Assist in production of site forms and technical reports.
- Communicate on a regular basis with the North Wind project manager, field technicians, and clients.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings and project updates.
- Drive daily to project areas using a 4‑wheel drive North Wind vehicle.
- Participate in North Wind training.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or equivalent discipline.
- 3+ years of field experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- 1 year of supervisory archaeological field experience in the southeastern United States.
- Experience working in inclement conditions (e.g., heat, rain, rugged terrain, etc.).
- Possess strong organizational skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instruction.
- Willingness and desire to learn and ask questions.
- Proficient in identification of cultural resources including both prehistoric and historic artifacts and features, mapping, and photography.
- Must exhibit great attention to detail.
- Ability to navigate using a topographic map and properly utilize a compass.
- Ability to use computers for data entry and word processing.
- Possesses a strong work ethic and a mature understanding of professionalism.
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively in training field crews.
- Ability and willingness to travel to various field locations, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, often across rugged terrain.
- Willingness and ability to work in a dynamic setting and consistently enact high performance standards and a strong team ethic in support of North Wind’s commitment to gathering high‑quality in‑field data.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime hours.
- Ability and willingness to travel to project area up to ten (10) days at a time for multiple field sessions.
- Must pass pre‑employment background check.
- Must pass pre‑employment drug screening.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with all necessary endorsements.
- Must be able, by reason of experience, training, or both, to operate a 4‑wheel high clearance North Wind vehicle (truck and/or jeep) to complete the work task(s).
- Applicants are required to have REAL ACT‑compliant documentation at time of hire and nothing on record that would prohibit them from employment on federal government contracts.
- Experience with ESRI Field Maps.
- Data collection using iPads and Geodes.
- Be a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions (rain, snow, sleet, wind, heat, cold, etc.).
