Post-Doctoral Research Associate: Department of Physics and Astronomy - UTK

The experimental nuclear physics group working in medium energy and fundamental symmetries at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is seeking a postdoctoral position to begin in January 2026. The successful candidate will contribute to the group’s neutron beta decay efforts at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, conduct ongoing analysis of Jefferson Lab experiments, and help develop future experiments. The position requires a PhD (or satisfied all substantive requirements for a PhD) in nuclear or particle physics.

• Run the Nab beta‑decay experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and analyze the resulting data.
• Commission and operate a Dynamic Nuclear Polarization system for JLab experiments.
• Analyze data from Jefferson Lab experiments and present results to the collaboration and the community at scientific conferences.
• Assist in the design, construction, and maintenance of experimental apparatus.
• Mentor and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in a multi‑institutional collaboration.

• Education: PhD in physics by December 2025 (or equivalent).
• Experience: Working in large experimental collaborations and data analysis of large data sets.
• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Experience with vacuum and cryogenic apparatus.

• Experience: Working at a large user facility.
• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Python, ROOT/C++, LabVIEW, Class IV laser operation, laser optics alignment.

• Anticipated hiring range: $62 000 – $65 000 (depending on postdoctoral experience)
