About Campus Police

Campus police officers are here to protect and serve the campus community. The department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Hardin Valley Campus, and answers emergency calls at . Per TCA 49-7-118, a campus police officer is a person commissioned by an employing institution and sworn to provide police services, enforce law, exercise arrest authority and carry firearms, and is subject to the Tennessee POST commission.

In addition to safety, campus police officers offer services to students, visitors and employees:

  • Vehicle battery boost
  • Vehicle unlock
  • 30-day lost and found
  • Escorts on campus to or from vehicles or classrooms
  • Community based policing

Campus police officers are required to be on campus 30 minutes prior to the start of classes and 30 minutes after the last adjourns. Shifts are day and/or evening; on-call, weekend, or overnight shifts are not required. Shifts run from 0700 to 2230 hours. Officers work a 37.5-hour work week; overtime is rare. Administrative closing days do not require personal leave hours.

The Daily Crime Log tracks reported crimes on campuses over the last 60 days and is available through the Pellissippi State resources.

Campus police leadership strives to maintain a great work-life balance. Officers are supported by security guards for minor requests such as door unlocks or battery boosts.

Position Summary

Position Summary: The overall purpose is to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the college.

Essential Functions
  • 30% Patrols college grounds and adjacent areas on foot and in motor vehicle to deter crime. Enforce state laws and college and system policies. Apprehend offenders and make arrests as necessary. Maintain all department issued equipment.
  • 25% Conduct investigations into criminal activity, motor vehicle accidents, illness and injuries. Prepare police reports, motor vehicle accident reports, and records for court. Testify at judicial hearings and trials. Monitor security camera recordings and perform related clerical tasks.
  • 10% Provide direction, supervision and training for contract security guards; train guards on patrol techniques, building access, investigations, and emergency plans.
  • 10% Inspect property for safety hazards and security, unlock doors for authorized persons, and provide vehicle unlock and jump-start service.
  • 5% Perform tasks related to emergency incidents and drills; provide mutual aid to local police agencies as needed.
  • 5% Provide first aid and coordinate emergency response with EMS, fire, and other agencies; inspect emergency equipment.
  • 5% Monitor meetings between college officials and students or employees to ensure safety; provide escorts and security for events.
  • 5% Monitor traffic flow and parking; issue tickets per college regulations and state vehicle laws.
  • 5% Maintain P.O.S.T. certification by attending annual training and pursue ongoing professional development.

Job Requirements

Requires one-year experience as a P.O.S.T. certified Police Officer with current certification (fully qualified pay) or one year of POST-certified experience with the ability to obtain recertification within six months of initial employment (probationary pay).

Part-time experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time experience. POST standards include: 18 years of age, U.S. citizenship, high school diploma or equivalent, ability to pass extensive background checks, no disqualifying felony or certain other offenses, fingerprints on file, valid physical examination, good moral character, and, if applicable, medical clearance as determined by a licensed provider. A second language is helpful but not required.
