POSITION SUMMARY: The Assistant Program Instructor is primarily responsible for providing quality assistance and support to sports programs and events while maintaining a safe, non-competitive environment for YMCA participants and members.

- Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
- Recommend participation in a variety of programs.
- Support our annual campaign by and inviting members to participate.
- Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
- Be informed about volunteer opportunities.
- Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.

Pay Range : $10/hour
Essential Functions- Assist with the supervision of participants during programs in order to ensure safety.
- Introduce yourself and make efforts to recognize participants/members on subsequent visits.
- Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.
- Assist in the set-up and take down of equipment/sports sites as needed.
- Be attentive, enthusiastic, and ready to assist sports staff/participants.
- Provide positive feedback to participants as appropriate.
- Provide safe programs and environment for all participants, volunteers and staff.
- Be a positive role model and conduct self in accordance with the YMCA Mission.
- Incorporate and encourage the use of the YMCA core values.
- Attend scheduled department meetings and training/clinics offered.
- Assist with other projects or activities as needed.
- Assist with the supervision of the youth sports site, by making sure that all participants are in the designated areas.
- Possess/acquire knowledge of all aspects of the particular sports league, which includes teams, coaches, rosters, schedules, pictures, awards, etc.
- Maintain a clean work site, which includes picking up trash, vacuuming etc.
- Maintain, observe and inspect equipment and facilities on a regular basis and inform supervisor of concerns.
- May assist in leading youth sports clinics or assisting in coaching youth sports.
- Prepare all sports sites for practice and games (i.e. lining fields, setting bases, setting goals and preparing equipment for use and distributing equipment).
- At least 16 years of age
- Ability to communicate effectively with sports coaches, staff and parents of youth sports participants
- Organizational and human relations skills in order to provide adequate support to sports programs
- Basic knowledge of the phases of physical education for all age groups served
- Ability to visually inspect participation space and equipment for safety
- Current certifications in First Aid, Safety & Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention and New Employee Orientation or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
- Ability to lift 40-50 pounds and transport, set-up and take down equipment.
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time
- Ability to project voice so participants can hear skill instructions
- Ability to visibly observe program participants
- Ability to visually inspect equipment and report any cleaning or repairs needed
- Ability to crouch and bend/twist at the waist and work in a kneeling position
- Ability to perform repetitive motions
- Ability to communicate effectively with participants, staff and volunteers
- Ability to demonstrate and lead activities
- Ability to solve problems/address participant concerns and use sound judgment even when distracted by noise and activity
- Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures
- Ability to physically and mentally respond to emergencies and administer First Aid effectively
- Ability to work in a variety of environments (i.e. indoor, outdoor, warm, cold, noisy)
- Ability to work in areas or on equipment that often creates conditions of dust and/or dampness
