Description

The Special Education Coordinator/Coach is a dual‑role position responsible for ensuring effective implementation of special education services and enhancing instructional practices for students with disabilities. The role oversees compliance with legal mandates, supports development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and provides coaching and professional development to special education and general education staff while facilitating collaboration among staff, families, and external partners.

This position plays a critical role in building capacity, improving student outcomes, and fostering inclusive education environments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Program Coordination and Compliance:
    • Ensure district and school compliance with IDEA and other applicable laws and regulations.
    • Oversee timelines and documentation for evaluations, re‑evaluations, and IEPs.
    • Monitor implementation of IEPs and related services to ensure fidelity and effectiveness.
    • Facilitate and/or participate in IEP and eligibility meetings.
    • Serve as liaison between families, schools, service providers, and external agencies.
    • Collect, analyze, and report special education data to inform decision‑making and ensure accountability.
    • Support accurate record‑keeping and readiness for audits or monitoring by state and federal agencies.
  • Instructional Coaching and Professional Development:
    • Provide instructional coaching and support to special education and general education teachers.
    • Model and promote evidence‑based instructional practices, differentiation, and accommodations/modifications.
    • Guide teachers in using data to drive instruction and monitor progress on IEP goals.
    • Support inclusive practices and co‑teaching models.
    • Facilitate collaborative planning, problem‑solving, and reflective practice.
    • Deliver and/or coordinate professional development related to special education laws, instructional strategies, behavior management, and UDL (Universal Design for Learning).

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of federal and state special education laws and procedures (IDEA).
  • Deep understanding of IEP development, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with evidence‑based instructional strategies, specially designed instruction (SDI), and curriculum modifications.
  • Knowledge of data analysis methods and progress monitoring tools.
Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Effective coaching, mentoring, and facilitation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Competence in conflict resolution and collaborative problem‑solving.
  • Skilled in using educational technology and special education data systems (e.g., IEP software).
