OVERVIEW TO THE ROLE

The Head of Department is responsible for facilitating the operation of his/her department, by playing the role of chief academic officer of the department. The Head of Department facilitates the work of the department, and serves as an advocate to the Dean for departmental needs and priorities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure departmental adherence to applicable governing university regulatory policies
  • Respond to requests for departmental input from the Dean
  • Prepare the Department's Annual Report.
  • Submit the annual staffing proposals to the Dean
  • Work with the Dean to prepare annual budget proposal for the Department, and monitor the budget.
  • Facilitate departmental curriculum revisions and implementation, through meetings with focus groups and committees.
  • Facilitate the deployment of material and human resources by developing class schedules and teaching assignments. This involves an equitable planning and adjustment of teaching loads and proper assignment of available assistants and resources.
  • Schedule and preside over department meetings.
  • Promote a team effort within the department for addressing departmental and institutional issues.
  • Work to maintain civility and respect among faculty, faculty/students, and faculty/university officers.
  • Help to informally mediate conflicts between departmental faculty members and report on series incidents/conflicts to the Dean in case not resolved internally.
  • Communicate effectively with other academic departments to insure co-operation in maintaining an integrated curriculum, as well as attaining the mission, objectives and outcomes of the University.
  • Maintain sound relations with important university constituencies, including departmental alumni.
  • Manage student grade appeal/complaints.
  • Facilitate implementation of revisions in catalog copy/websites/policies which address departmental curriculum issues.
  • Oversee and monitor student progress and academic advising.
  • Serve as the primary departmental contact for institutional advancement and program accreditation.
  • All duties and responsibilities shall be carried out under the direction of your Dean.
