United Veterinary Care welcomes veterinary students for externships at our partner hospital, the Firehouse Animal Health Center in Kyle, Texas. This hands–on experience allows students to apply classroom knowledge in real‑world cases in a full‑service animal hospital.

Overview

This externship is designed for veterinary students in their clinical years (typically 3rd or 4th year) at AVMA‑accredited schools. Students receive a stipend to help cover travel and lodging, unless the hosting school’s policy prohibits it.

Eligibility Requirements

• Current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.
• Preference for students in their official externship blocks for school credit.
• Proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members may obtain no‑cost coverage through the SAVMA Member Benefit and Resources portal.

What to Expect from Your Externship

During your externship you will actively participate in cases and develop clinical skills under the supervision of experienced veterinarians and support staff. You can expect to be involved in surgical cases, dental procedures, emergency care, sick patient workups, and routine medical appointments. We encourage externs to select one case per week for research and discussion with the team, fostering mentorship and collaborative learning.
