Job Description

A full‑time Maintenance Specialist is needed in the Water Department to install, operate, repair, and maintain wells, reservoirs, water mains, service connections, fire hydrants, and the main pumping station. The role involves collaborating with a dedicated team to provide high‑quality water for the City of La Crosse. Duties include creating tools, performing custom work, operating and maintaining shop equipment, and welding maintenance and repairs (hard surface welding on buckets, wear bars, skids, etc.).

The incumbent will design and fabricate specialty equipment for the department.

Responsibilities
  • Install, operate, repair, and maintain wells, reservoirs, water mains, service connections, fire hydrants, and the main pumping station.
  • Produce custom work, tool creation, and repairs.
  • Operate and maintain shop equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and repair welding on water equipment.
  • Design and fabricate a variety of projects and specialty equipment.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Welding certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Certificates in shield metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, oxyacetylene cutting and welding, brazing, soldering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with air‑brake endorsement, or ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • Experience in heavy truck and off‑road equipment repair.
  • Experience with automotive and small engine maintenance and repair.
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, and computer‑controlled hydraulic systems.
