Maintenance Worker – City of La Crosse – Parks Department
The City of La Crosse is seeking to hire a full-time Maintenance Worker to become an essential member of the Parks Department. The La Crosse Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department operates and maintains a 1,560‑acre park system consisting of 47 park sites, 18 park shelters/pavilions, 12 athletic fields, 2 beaches, 5 boat landings, 2 marina/harbors, an 18‑hole frisbee golf course, 27 miles of paved trails, and 45 miles of natural surface trails.
In addition, the department has an 1,100‑acre riparian marsh and 1,312 acres of public land across the bluffs. The individual in this position will work with a dedicated team of employees whose actions improve the lives of the citizens of La Crosse daily.
- Operates trucks, tractors, compactors, chippers, power broom, chain saws, trimmer, mowers – standard and 10‑foot, rototiller, sod cutter, hand tools, power hand tools and other equipment used in park maintenance.
- Operates pick‑up plow/broom for snow removal.
- Operates, maintains and repairs ice refrigeration equipment and ice resurfacing equipment.
- Loads and unloads equipment, tools and materials used for repairs and maintenance projects.
- Assists with excavating work sites.
- Cleans work sites.
- Assists with concrete construction projects; sets forms, shovels materials, assists with finishing; erects barricades; flags traffic.
- Fuels equipment and vehicles; cleans equipment and vehicles.
- May assist with tree removal and trimming.
- May mow grass and weeds.
- Directs limited‑term employees doing similar work.
- May oversee mowing crew.
- May respond to emergencies.
- Maintains regular and predictable on‑site attendance.
- May participate in safety training.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One to two years of light equipment operating experience, or a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Physical ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as trucks, pick‑up, tractors, power saws, chain saw, hand excavation tools, air hammer, compressors, compactor, wrenches, concrete finishing tools, mowers, carpenter’s tools and other light equipment.
- Coordination of eye, hand, foot, and limb movements; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, and pulling.
- Ability to work under occasionally unsafe and uncomfortable conditions with exposure to temperature variations, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents, traffic hazards and dust.
