Position Summary:

Located 45 minutes from the Nation's Capital, in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a two-time Aspen Award-winning institution with programs in over 100 disciplines. This is an applicant pool for part-time temporary faculty in the Humanities disciplines of Philosophy in the Department of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education. The Humanities areas taught include Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Logic, and Introduction to Religion. CSM is actively accepting applications for adjunct positions at all campus locations. The college also has a significant need for adjunct faculty to contribute to our Early College program, where students are dually enrolled in their local high school and CSM toward a certificate or degree.

Early College faculty teach face-to-face classes between 8:15 am and 2:00 pm, two to four days a week.

CSM is seeking a dynamic individual who can implement the comprehensive mission of a community college by assessing, documenting, and improving student learning through instruction.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the faculty member must be able to perform the following essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

Teaching Functions
  • Plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or on weekends at the College of Southern Maryland campus, center, or clinical location to which assigned.
  • Ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled; communicate absences and schedule changes to the Course or Program Coordinator.
  • Maintain high expertise in taught subjects and stimulate enthusiasm for those subjects.
  • Plan each unit or lesson with content and method to make each class meaningful.
  • Ensure that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and remains current.
  • Teach all classes according to an approved course syllabus and for the required duration.
  • Study and utilize students' learning styles to facilitate optimal teaching and learning.
  • Incorporate instructional technologies in instructional delivery as appropriate.
  • Maximize learning opportunities for each student.
  • Keep students informed about course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements; provide prompt grading and ongoing feedback.
  • Demonstrate genuine concern for each student through individual conferences, as needed.
Administrative Functions
  • File an appropriate course syllabus for each course taught with the program coordinator and HEA administrative assistant.
  • Ensure each course section is web-enhanced and use college online resources (home page, syllabi posting, grade book, etc.).
  • Use the college Group Wise email system for professional communication with students and college personnel, with a typical response time of 48-72 hours.
  • Keep Course or Program Coordinator informed of any student concerns or conduct violations within 48 hours of the incident.
  • Maintain accurate scholastic records, including attendance records; conduct class evaluations and other college evaluations per policy.
  • Submit academic reports and other documentation in a timely manner; attend all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by college leadership.
  • Become familiar with all college policies and procedures and comply accordingly; become familiar with the Faculty Handbook; convey college information to students as requested by college officials.
Program Improvement
  • Participate in program and curriculum review, student learning outcomes assessment, and related initiatives.
  • Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including equipment, to the Course Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Division Chair, or designee.
  • Suggest curriculum improvements to leadership in keeping with college objectives.
Professional Development
  • Stay informed of current trends and new instructional approaches through professional development activities; submit continuing education records to the Program Coordinator and/or HEA Administrative Assistant.
Minimum Education and Training
