Overview

Position:
Part-time temporary faculty in Geography in the Department of Arts, Humanities, Social Science, and Education at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). This is an applicant pool for part-time temporary faculty in geography with courses including Introduction to Cultural Geography, Introduction to Geography, Introduction to Physical Geography, Maps and Mapping, United States Geography, and World Regional Geography. CSM seeks individuals who can implement the college’s mission by assessing, documenting, and improving student learning through instruction.

CSM is accepting applications for adjunct positions at all campus locations. The college also has a need for adjunct faculty to contribute to the Early College program, where students are dual enrolled with local high schools while completing courses at CSM toward a certificate or degree. Classes for Early College are held face-to-face between 8:15 am and 2:00 pm, two to four days a week.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the faculty member must be able to perform the following essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

Teaching Functions
  • Plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or on weekends at the College of Southern Maryland campus, center, or clinical location to which assigned.
  • Ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled; communicate absences and changes to course schedule to the Course or Program Coordinator.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulate enthusiasm for those subjects.
  • Plan each unit or lesson to make each class meaningful, including content and method.
  • Ensure that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency.
  • Teach all classes according to an approved course syllabus and for the required duration.
  • Utilize students' learning styles to facilitate effective teaching and learning.
  • Incorporate instructional technologies as appropriate.
  • Maximize learning opportunities for each student.
  • Keep students informed about course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
  • Provide prompt feedback on progress and grading of assignments.
  • Demonstrate genuine concern for each student through individual conferences as needed.
Administrative Functions
  • File an appropriate course syllabus with the program coordinator and HEA administrative assistant.
  • Ensure each course section is web-enhanced and use available college online resources.
  • Use the college Group Wise email system for professional communication with students, faculty, and college personnel with a response time of 48-72 hours.
  • Notify Course or Program Coordinator of any student concerns or conduct violations within 48 hours of the incident.
  • Maintain accurate scholastic records, including attendance.
  • Conduct class evaluations and other college evaluations per policy.
  • Submit academic reports and documentation timely as appropriate.
  • Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development, orientation activities, and other meetings as called by college leadership.
  • Familiarize and comply with all college policies, procedures, and the Faculty Handbook.
  • Convey college-related information to students in a timely manner as requested by college officials.
Program Improvement
  • Participate in program and curriculum review, development, and student learning outcomes assessment initiatives.
  • Recommend textbooks and instructional materials, including equipment, to the Course Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Division Chair, or designee.
  • Suggest curriculum improvements to leadership in line with the college objectives.
