Job Purpose And Summary

At CVS Health, we are focused on transforming health care for our customers and making our company a great place to work. We help people navigate the health care system—by improving access, lowering costs, and being a trusted partner for every meaningful moment of health. Within our Retail locations, we bring this promise to life with heart every day.

The Pharmacy Manager Emerging Leader (PMEL) plays a critical role in cultivating a culture of excellence in their pharmacy by acting as a role model for all, demonstrating genuine care, and setting the bar for the pharmacy team, while developing their own leadership skills in preparation for increased responsibility.

As a PMEL, you will build upon your skills and responsibilities as a Staff or District Support Pharmacist and acquire additional competencies to become ready for a Pharmacy Manager (PM) role. A self-paced collaborative training roadmap—combining virtual and hands‑on learning—prepares you to lead a pharmacy independently. Program length typically ranges from 3–6 months, depending on prior leadership experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Live our purpose by helping to manage and improve patient health through safe and appropriate dispensing, counseling, and immunizing practices.
  • Take direction from the Pharmacy Manager and oversee the pharmacy as their proxy during bench shifts, strengthening performance measures through coaching and consistent follow‑up.
  • Assume the Pharmacy Manager’s day‑to‑day duties when serving as the sole or primary pharmacist‑on‑duty.
  • Support safe and accurate prescription fulfillment by directing the pharmacy team to follow workflow procedures and safety guardrails at every workstation.
  • Contribute to positive patient experiences by showing empathy and genuine care, coaching the team to demonstrate compassionate care, collaborating with the patient’s total health‑care team, and proactively resolving insurance and/or medication issues.
  • Proactively offer and deliver immunizations, engaging and supporting Pharmacy Technicians to learn to immunize.
  • Manage pharmacy inventory effectively by following best practices, with a special focus on protecting cold‑chain products.
  • Partner with the Pharmacy Manager to ensure operations remain fully compliant with state Board of Pharmacy regulations, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Remain flexible for scheduling and business needs, supporting the Pharmacy Manager with schedule creation and compliance.
  • Maintain relevant clinical and technical skills, actively seek opportunities to expand knowledge, and support patients through pharmacist‑delivered clinical care such as testing and prescribing services where permissible.
  • Understand and comply with all federal and state laws, Board of Pharmacy regulations, professional standards, and ethical principles; uphold CVS Health policies, controlled‑substance dispensing, record‑keeping, patient privacy, and a safe, inclusive workplace for colleagues.
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ months of experience as a Staff or District Support Pharmacist.
  • Active Pharmacist License in the state where the store is located.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Not on the DEA Excluded Parties list.
Essential Functions
  • Regular and predictable attendance, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to complete required training within the designated timeframe.
  • Attention and Focus
    • Maintain concentration over time.
    • Pivot quickly between tasks to meet patient and business needs.
    • Confirm prescription information and label accuracy to ensure patient safety.
  • Customer Service and Team Orientation
    • Actively look for ways to help people in a friendly manner.
    • Notice and respond appropriately to patients’ reactions.
  • Communication Skills
    • Use and understand verbal and written communication with patients and colleagues.
    • Practice active listening—give full attention, ask questions, and avoid inappropriate interruptions.
    • Provide clear, actionable direction, coaching, and feedback to team members.
