Role Overview :

Traffic Signal Technician installs, maintains, programs and repairs traffic control devices. Example traffic signals, pedestrian signals, vehicle detection systems and traffic malfunction units to name a few. Responsible for preventative maintenance on signal cabinets, general up keep of state maintained signals/flashers. Responding to emergency call outs for signals or winter operations. Being on call is a job requirement. Working in various weather conditions, long hours and overtime are also all requirements.

Electrical experience a plus, on the job training provided. Bucket work required. Ideal candidate will be a self-starter who takes initiative, manage priorities, handles high stress environments well and is able to complete tasks independently. Training and completion of the INDOT District Signal Technician Training Certification is provided.

Traffic Signal Technician:

Candidates who have not completed the INDOT District Signal Technician Training Certification may be hired at a lower minimum salary, starting at $22.00/hr, and will then be eligible for a promotional increase upon achieving their certification.

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.

Location:

This position is located in INDOT's LaPorte District, Technical Services Division.

Pay Rate:

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

* Perform maintenance, repair, trouble shooting, testing, updating, diagnose malfunctions and installation of traffic signal/flasher control devices either at an intersection or in the shop, including.

* Replace malfunctioning controllers with temporary units when shop repairs are required.

* Operate testing devices for isolating and identifying electrical and electronic malfunctions (i.e. ohmmeter, voltmeter, ammeter, potentiometer, phase rotation indicators).

* Complete signal or flasher installations (i.e. poles, mast arms, or pedestals; span, catenary and down guys: signal/flasher heads: loop, sonic, magnetic or pad detectors; pre-timed or actuated controller, pedestrian signals, etc.).

* Inspect and perform routine preventive maintenance on traffic signal/flasher control equipment (i.e. check structural alignment, clearance, and security; clean, adjust, or replace contacts, fuses, relays motors: check voltage and amperage load).

* Respond to emergency off-hour call-outs immediately.

* Recommend modifications in the layout of intersections or technical aspects of equipment.

* Make field measurements, collect topographical data, and assist in the layout of a signalized intersection.

* Assist contractors with technical aspects of traffic signal equipment operations.

* Maintain and update electronic files of all traffic signals for signal timing, emergency call-outs, and equipment inventory.

* Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.
