Overview

The Carpenter General Foreman oversees and coordinates the daily operations of civil construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and timelines. The role involves supervising crews, managing resources, and liaising with project managers and subcontractors. Must be familiar with work assigned and ensure that all work meets or exceeds standards, holding the crew accountable.

Responsibilities include motivating employees, supporting the immediate supervisor, learning safety hazards, and effectively using or operating tools and equipment in a plant operations or construction jobsite setting.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of civil construction crews including earthworks, concrete, drainage, storm water and structural works.
  • Supervise and set direction for all Foreman and Leadmen on‑site to ensure best use of company resources and adherence to all company policies and state and federal regulations.
  • Provide formal coaching and feedback to Foreman.
  • Schedule equipment, materials and tools to maximize production and minimize costs, collaborating with the Civil Superintendent on all scheduled activities.
  • Manage, coach, train and implement standardized work plans and assist the Civil Superintendent in process improvement efforts.
  • Maintain responsibility for safe working conditions and safety procedures on the project, particularly for specific disciplines.
  • Enforce company, jobsite‑specific, federal, and state safety regulations on site and address concerns with the Civil Superintendent.
  • Accountable for project construction activities and communicating expectations to craftsmen, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Maintain records of labor and equipment production and compare them to the estimate.
  • Communicate with the Civil Superintendent concerning any cost overruns and utilization of company resources.
  • Mentor Foreman on production costs, scope of work, quality, and safety.
  • Maintain and update all crew and equipment matrices.
  • Hold crew members and foremen accountable for company and project rules.
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and Best Practices are followed.
  • Be familiar with mix designs and the curing process for concrete.
  • Conduct weekly/quarterly safety and quality audits.
  • Have advanced knowledge of the QC process as it relates to check‑out procedures.
  • Responsible for receiving permits to support the work being performed.
Qualifications Physical
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.; may occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Hearing and comprehension are necessary for giving and receiving directions.
  • Will perform sedentary to heavy work.
  • Will operate all types of office equipment.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel/wood frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry, or feel objects on a frequent basis.
  • Position may require prolonged bending/twisting, walking, reaching overhead, squatting, sitting or standing and lifting.
  • Must be able to manipulate and traverse uneven terrain, ladders, and multi‑floor buildings with no elevator.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, muddy conditions, loose rock, loose/soft sand, etc.
  • Will be exposed to adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to drive cars/trucks as needed.
Mental
  • Must communicate effectively with management/supervision and field workers.
  • Talking and reading & writing comprehension necessary for giving and receiving directions.
  • Ability to use math/complete calculations.
  • Work at various tempos and concentrate amid distractions.
  • Decision‑making skills are necessary.
  • Detail‑oriented; must remember, examine, and observe details.
  • Requires strong leadership and motivational skills.
