Receive incoming calls for police, fire, emergency medical, and animal control assistance and dispatch necessary units; operate TCIC/NCIC, CAD, 911, and switchboard equipment; perform a variety of general support duties related to communications activities.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsPositively staffed with flexible scheduling. Staff receive training in department policies, procedures, and systems. Performance is observed during and after completion. Staff are trained to operate the switchboard, TCIC/NCIC, CAD system, and radio.
Supervision Received & ExercisedGeneral supervision from a Lead Dispatcher or the on‑duty Police Supervisor; experienced personnel exercise functional and technical supervision over less experienced staff.
Essential Job Functions- Adhere to City attendance and punctuality policies demonstrating dependability.
- Adhere to all City safety policies to prevent unnecessary or unreasonable risk of injury to self, others, or property.
- Adhere to department dress code policies to present a professional appearance, including appropriate grooming and attire.
- Receive emergency calls from the public for La Porte Police Department and contracted agencies; determine nature and location, prioritize, create CAD entry, dispatch units per established procedures.
- Maintain contact with all units on assignment; track status and location of police, fire, and EMS units.
- Advise the Fire Department of changing conditions, hazards, additional reports, and update instructions during en‑route and upon arrival of commanding officer.
- Provide pre‑arrival instructions to reporting person for the emergency; give continued EM instructions until Fire/EMS providers reach the scene.
- Answer non‑emergency class assistance after hours, order tow trucks and public works emergency service or contact appropriate agencies.
- Coordinate emergency calls and relay info or assistance requests involving other law‑enforcement agencies.
- Answer incoming calls; screen calls; wait on public at the counter and assist officers; perform general clerical work.
- Enter, update and retrieve info from teletype networks and TLETS/NLETS for wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, and other data.
- Operate automated and/or communications equipment, including computer‑assisted dispatch terminal; monitor and operate TDD/TTY for hearing‑impaired callers.
- Monitor public security cameras and alarms for City facilities and related locations.
- Train new employees in dispatch, including switchboard and TCIC/NCIC operation.
- Test and inspect equipment as required; assist in searches of arrested persons.
- Activate emergency notification systems.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Work in an office environment for indefinite periods. Must handle exposure to dust/mist, be able to stand, squat, walk, lift, and carry up to 20 lbs. Able to communicate clearly and effectively in person and by radio. Must handle stressful situations and operate personal computer, calculator, typewriter, and telephone equipment.
Qualifications- Basic office skills including Windows‑based PC applications.
- Understanding and application of broadcasting procedures, legal and radio/telephone communications.
- Familiarity with geographic features and streets of La Porte.
- Experience applying departmental policies, procedures, and public‑safety classification codes.
- Knowledge of TCIC/NCIC guidelines.
- Operating all communication equipment and office equipment accurately.
- Instruing new employees.
- Speak clearly and precisely.
- Work under pressure, make sound judgment in emergency situations.
- Effectively communicate with affected citizens.
- Operate teletyping and other office equipment.
- Spell accurately.
- Work various shifts as assigned.
- One‑year experience as a telecommunicator in public safety preferred.
- High‑School Diploma or GED required.
