Transportation Mechanic
* This position will start January 2026.*
Job Qualifications:- Minimum 18 years of age
- High School Diploma/GED (preferred)
- Required or be eligible toobtain and maintain
State School Bus Drivers Certification Course - Required or be eligible to obtain and maintain valid Texas Commerical Drivers License with "P" and "S" endorsements
- Requiredor be eligible to obtain and maintain state vehicle inspection certification
- Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and subject to random testing as outlined in the LPISD Board Policy
Responsible for the performance of directed and necessary repairs and upkeep of district fleet vehicles as outlined.
Duties and Responsibilities:- Perform state inspection on required vehicles
- Perform preventive maintenance checks and repair needed items
- Analyze and diagnose failures of all LPISD vehicles and recommend repairs as needed
- Perform major-technical repairs and overhauls of ignition systems, fuel, electrical, etc.
- Document all repair work on maintenance worksheet
- Perform necessary repairs listed on Bus Drivers and Vehicle Maintenance forms
- Perform all repairs on transportation department equipment, within the capability of the department
- Respond to emergency calls when notified. One mechanic will be on call on a rotating basis any time a bus is out
- Drive bus route as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.
Posture: Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Moderate walking, climbing; frequent grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; moderate driving
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress

The district contributes $400/monthly to the cost of "employee-only" health insurance which is $175/monthly greater than the state required amount of $225/monthly.
Pay Grade:Manual Trades, Pay Grade 4, 250 Days
Minimum: $16.48
Midpoint: $19.86
