SUBSTITUTE LIFEGUARD

STANDARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

This is a standard position description for substitute para educator positions with similar duties, responsibilities, classification, and compensation. Substitute para educators assigned to this position may or may not perform all the essential functions indicated in this description.

This description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change by the employer as needed.

Part I:
Position Summary

The Para educator performs instructional and support duties to assist in instruction, supervision, and education of students, either individually or in groups. May work with students in small groups or one-on-one, keeping students on task.

Part II:
Supervision and Controls over the Work

Paraeducators work under the supervision of supported staff and under the direction of the Principal or Designee. They must be familiar with district policies, IDEA, and Section 504 requirements.

Part III:
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers with assessment, curriculum, student interactions, behavior enforcement, and social development, in general or special education settings.
  • Assist students with daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, and health care, including colostomy and medical assistance as trained.
  • Follow approved procedures to restrain students at risk of harm.
  • Escort students to and from activities and supervise during recess, playground, bus duty, and hallways.
  • Communicate respectfully and confidentially with students, parents, and community members.
  • Provide instructional support, tutoring, and behavioral support, implementing visual supports and modifications.
  • Use behavior management plans, document student behavior, and maintain progress reports.
  • Assist with clerical duties as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including supervision and safety oversight, with approval.

Part IV:
Specific to Lifeguard

  • Be fully certified as a lifeguard per WAC , supervising swimmers, providing first aid/CPR, and rescue.
  • Monitor aquatic activities, maintain pool chemicals and equipment, inspect safety gear, and manage supplies.
Part V:

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work with interruptions, manage students' emotional needs, remain calm, follow directions, and maintain reliable attendance.
  • Support classroom management and communicate effectively in English.
Part VI:
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of experience working with children; education beyond high school may substitute experience.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Willingness to learn inclusive strategies for students with disabilities.
Part VII:
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Must lift/move 25–50 pounds, assist with student safety, and perform physical tasks. Work may involve exposure to outside weather, chemicals, bodily fluids, and infectious materials. Safety equipment may be required.
