Position: Engineering Technician III - Transportation (2025 Salary)

The City is seeking an Engineering Technician III to support the Transportation Division and help improve safety and mobility for our community. This position plays a key role in collecting and analyzing traffic data that informs roadway design, traffic operations, and public safety decisions.

The Engineering Technician III performs a combination of office and field work, including conducting traffic counts and studies, verifying intersection layouts, analyzing traffic collision data, and assisting with roadway design plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D. The position also uses Microsoft Office and specialized software to organize, analyze, and report transportation data.

As part of a customer-focused City team, this role serves as a first point of contact for residents with transportation-related questions or concerns, providing helpful information and supporting community needs.

These duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Regularly takes initiative in recommending changes in work methods, policies, and procedures to improve levels of service delivery and improve overall operating efficiencies.
  • Monitors day-to-day operations and anticipates and troubleshoots problems where needed.
  • Responds quickly and appropriately to citizen inquiries, requests for service, and/or complaints. Handles complaints and answers citizen inquiries regarding public work issues to best of ability. Follows through if unable to answer the question at the moment.
  • Routinely detects and prevents errors or mistakes that would prove costly or could seriously disrupt a city service or project.
  • Represents the City at inter-agency meetings, committee meetings, or with contractors or citizen groups as assigned. Prepare agendas, lead meetings and take meeting minutes related to section work.
  • Safely operate a vehicle to and from offsite facilities, inspection locations, or other locations necessary to perform assigned work. Uses computer(s) to perform engineering tasks related to section work, preparation of spreadsheets, design work, engineering modeling, AutoCAD, GIS, Bluebeam and other programs.
  • Usually perceives when non-routine activities are required and offers help without needing to be asked. Makes efforts to modify workload to assist with an emergent problem, assignment, or project whenever feasible.
  • Maintain accurate schedules for work, review work for accuracy, coach or train other staff as appropriate, and ensures timely completion of work. Refers all performance issues to immediate supervisor for resolution and participates in joint problem solving as appropriate.
  • May be assigned to assist with engineering work for another section (i.e. survey, utility mapping, construction inspection, plan review, design, transportation or drafting).
  • Participates as a member of the project management team for City public works construction projects. This includes ensuring project records conform to City, state and federal requirements, making revisions, and other project related records and correspondence.
  • May perform limited section supervision responsibilities in absence of section supervisor.
Transportation Design:
  • Manages and conducts all aspects of collecting transportation data including; traffic counts, turning movements, collision reports, speed studies, signal timing and intersection information. Compiles the data into reports, databases, and GIS. Makes recommendations to improve efficiency and safety.
  • First point of contact for citizens with transportation questions. Responds to customer requests and complaints regarding all traffic concerns such as speeding, signage, congestion, signals, site distance, traffic calming, etc. Provides appropriate information, conducts a site evaluation, and provides recommendations and alternatives in a timely fashion. Initiates work order for any necessary minor improvements such as signing or striping. Based on findings, makes recommendations for major improvements or projects.
  • Uses the latest version of AutoCAD Civil 3D for engineering design work and updating the City's mapping and records systems.
  • Performs project engineer tasks such as conducting studies, preliminary field surveys, and researching issues and alternatives.
  • Calculates intersection level of service or signal timing plans using HCM, SIDRA, SYNCHRO, or other appropriate software. Routinely, reviews intersection level of service and signal timing plan to ensure efficient and safe operations. Makes proactive recommendations to improve service and maintain safety. Works with an Engineer to develop and implement timing plans.
  • Assists with the review of Traffic Impact Analysis submitted by developers and calculates traffic mitigation fees. Presents findings in written form to Transportation Manager.
  • May be assigned to lead and/or direct technical support staff on assigned projects which entail a relatively typical transportation design and can be anticipated to present few and/or minor engineering design complexities.
