Position: Fire Department - Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO)

Job Summary

This position is responsible for participating in fire suppression and other emergency response activities involving the safe operation of emergency vehicles.

Job Duties

Participates in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical responses as needed using the appropriate techniques and equipment
Drives and operates a variety of emergency vehicles safely in emergent and non-emergent conditions
Operates a variety of specialized tools and equipment
Ability to position and operate apparatus for effective water supply and fire ground operations
Conducts apparatus inspections and ensures proper maintenance of equipment, vehicles, buildings, and grounds and provides documentation
Completes a variety of reports
Participates in training exercises and continued education; maintains required certifications
Assists in public relations and fire safety education activities
Conducts fire prevention and pre-plan inspections
Performs related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

Must be at least 21 years of age
Possession of or ability to obtain valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
Certified Firefighter I and Firefighter II
EMT-B preferred (or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date utilizing our internal EMT courses or a self-pay, third-party program)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures
Knowledge of firefighting tactics, hydraulics, and pump operations
Ability to operate emergency vehicles safely and effectively under all conditions
Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs
Skill in the effective communication of ideas through oral and written communications
Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions
Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports
