Position Summary

The Lafayette School Corporation is seeking a caring, collaborative special education teacher to serve students in its K–4 Autism Program. The teacher will provide individualized instruction that supports academic achievement, communication, social development, emotional regulation, and independence.

This position leads a structured, supportive classroom and works closely with families, paraprofessionals, general education teachers, related service providers, and administrators to help students succeed throughout the school day.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education programs (IEPs) that reflect each student's strengths, needs, and goals.
  • Provide specially designed instruction in academic skills, communication, social interaction, adaptive skills, and independence.
  • Use evidence-based instructional practices, including visual supports, structured routines, explicit instruction, and positive reinforcement.
  • Adapt curriculum, instructional materials, and classroom activities to support individual learning needs and access to grade-level content or content connectors.
  • Collaborate with speech-language pathologists and other specialists to support communication, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), as appropriate.
  • Implement individualized behavior support plans and teach strategies for emotional regulation, transitions, and participation.
  • Collect and analyze instructional and behavioral data to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and communicate results to families and team members.
  • Coordinate IEP meetings and maintain accurate, timely documentation using Indiana IEP.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support meaningful inclusion and participation with peers, when appropriate .
  • Provide daily direction, schedules, coaching, and support to paraprofessionals assigned to the program.
  • Coordinate support for personal care, toileting, feeding, mobility, and other daily living needs, providing direct assistance as required.
  • Maintain a safe, organized classroom that supports students' sensory, communication, and learning needs.
  • Provide appropriate supervision across classroom activities, transitions, and other school settings.
  • Maintain regular, respectful communication with parents and guardians and coordinate with outside providers when appropriate and authorized.
  • Complete required district and position-specific training within established timelines, including within 60 days of hire when applicable.
  • Perform other duties associated with the teaching profession as assigned by administration.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in elementary education or special education.
  • Valid Indiana Department of Education teaching license in Mild or Intense Interventions appropriate for the assigned grade levels and position.
  • Experience working with students on the autism spectrum.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices for autism instruction, individualized programming, and positive behavior supports.
  • Knowledge of IEP development, implementation, progress monitoring, and Indiana IEP.
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment regarding student learning, safety, and well-being.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching elementary students in an autism classroom.
