Overview
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith based organization, has a job opening for a Bookkeeper/Human Resources Assistant for the Lafayette Corps in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Responsibilities- Human Resources: maintain the filing system of HR documents; process electronic and manual new hire/termination requests, background check submissions and e-verify entries; post open positions and participate in the interview process; lead orientation meetings; ensure policy understanding and compliance; monitor attendance balances and leave requests; audit and perform data entry and edits in the time keeping system; prepare and track health insurance enrollment/termination information;
assist and train employees in the proper usage of the implemented human capital management system; answer telephone and provide general information regarding HR operations and services; process incoming and outgoing mail. - Bookkeeping: perform specialized clerical and bookkeeping tasks in recording and maintaining precise fiscal records and financial data; apply fundamental bookkeeping knowledge to posting, checking entries, issuing checks, balancing accounts, and preparing basic financial reports for assigned accounts; prepare and maintain financial records accurately and securely; report on financial condition under supervision; serve as liaison to Divisional Headquarters Finance Department.
High school diploma or G.E.D. required supplemented by additional secretarial courses, and two years of experience performing progressively responsible accounting and/or bookkeeping work with limited supervision and some exposure to double-entry fund accounting; human resources support work in an office environment; any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources.
- Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain an efficient and organized filing system to ensure items can be retrieved in a timely manner.
- Knowledge of general office principles, practices and procedures.
- Ability to maintain the confidential nature of personnel related information.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
- Ability to prepare and proof payroll records and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to participate in interviewing, screening and selecting qualified applicants to fill open positions.
- Knowledge of basic double-entry bookkeeping principles and practices and of applications to accounting transactions.
- Knowledge of modern data entry methods as they pertain to bookkeeping functions.
- Knowledge of financial accounting systems and procedures.
- Ability to prepare routine and special financial reports and records.
- Ability to obtain numerical totals and balances and to verify information from complex forms and transfer to computers or manual report.
- Ability to accept fiscal responsibility of assigned functionalized accounts.
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English. Ability to keypunch information into a computer. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a computer, photocopy machine, typewriter, facsimile, calculator. Ability to answer the telephone in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to sort and file items alphabetically and numerically. Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical computations repeatedly, rapidly and accurately.
Ability to operate 10-key calculator. Ability to work well under deadlines. Ability to handle multiple projects at once without disorganization. Ability to travel to conferences, seminars, training, etc. Duties are usually performed seated; sitting may be relieved by standing or walking. Limited physical effort required (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.
Work is performed in a normal office environment with little or no physical discomforts from weather or noise. Travel to conferences, seminars, training, etc. where there could be discomforts from weather.
