Overview

Troup County, located in West Georgia on the Alabama border, operates under the governance of an elected 5-member Board of Commissioners and an appointed County Manager. The County oversees essential services, including general administration, public safety, transportation, judicial processes, and health and welfare. Covering approximately 445 square miles, Troup County features three municipalities—LaGrange (the county seat), Hogansville, and West Point—and is home to more than 67,000 residents.

The area boasts vibrant industries such as textiles, automotive, and chemicals, and features higher education institutions like LaGrange College, West Georgia Technical College, and Point University.

Role Description

The Building Official is a full-time, on-site role located in Newnan, GA. The Building Official will manage and oversee the enforcement of building codes and ordinances to ensure the safety, welfare, and compliance of all building development in the county. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing construction plans, issuing permits, conducting site inspections, ensuring adherence to safety regulations, addressing code violations, and providing information and support to the public and contractors.

The Building Official also supervises staff, prepares reports, and maintains compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.

Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, construction standards, zoning laws, and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in permit issuance processes, reviewing construction plans, and performing inspections.
  • Leadership and management skills, including staff supervision and department operations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with contractors, the public, and other stakeholders effectively.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail for addressing violations and ensuring compliance.
  • Proficiency in using technology and software systems related to permit tracking and inspection reporting is an asset.
  • Prior experience in building or code enforcement, or related fields, is highly desirable.
  • Certification as a Building Official or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
