Job SummaryThe City of Laguna Beach is seeking a skilled and dedicated Wastewater Technician II to join our team. This journey-level position offers the opportunity to perform a wide range of tasks, from maintaining and troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the City’s wastewater infrastructure. Examples of Duties:
The normal duties for this position are described in the official job description titled "Wastewater Technician II". These duties are not exclusive or all‑inclusive; additional duties may be required and assigned.
Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Experience: Three (3) years of public works maintenance and construction work or one year as a City of Laguna Beach Wastewater Utility Worker II or Wastewater Technician I. Experience with municipal sewer system repair and electrical work is highly desirable.
- An applicant must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record at time of hire.
- A Class A or B Driver’s License is required within 12 months of appointment.
- Wastewater Technician II – A California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Collection System Maintenance Grade II certification is required within 12 months of appointment.
Positions in this series may receive calls for emergency service and may be required to respond during non‑scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

. Applications will be screened carefully and selected applicants will be invited to undergo a structured panel interview to evaluate their knowledge, skills and abilities. The appointing hiring authority will further review the job‑related qualifications of applicants deemed eligible before making selection decisions. The selection process may be modified based on the needs of the City.
Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre‑placement physical including a drug test, and undergo education and employment verification and reference checks.

Working ConditionsWork is performed in various environmental conditions, with exposure to outdoor temperature and weather variations, traffic and equipment noise, vibrations, fumes, grease, machinery and moving parts, odors, dust, and chemicals such as cleaning solvents and raw sewage. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (or more with assistance), sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods is required.
Near and far vision for reading documents and use of the computer, and acute hearing are required. An employee generally works outdoors, travels to different locations, and may be exposed to inclement weather, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Driving motorized vehicles in heavy vehicle traffic is also part of the job.
