Essentials Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
- Obtains and initiates all relevant and necessary clinical documentation (into EMR) of the patient’s chief complaint, history of present illness, personal medical history (ocular and general), family medical history (ocular and general), review of systems, current medications and allergies, all pertinent ocular findings accurately and completely, and any other clinical data as required by an insurance company or clinical trial.
- Performs testing to include visual acuity (including pinhole) measurement, color vision testing, lensometry, Shirmer’s (tear function) testing, pupil function testing, tonometry (tono-pen and applanation), automated visual field, auto-refractor/glare test (BAT), evaluation of extra-ocular movement (EOM), confrontational visual field testing, fundus photography, corneal topography, Optos, pachymetry, Jackson-Cross refraction, angle assessment, Humphrey visual field testing and other patient services as requested by the treating MD/OD.
Informs patients of purpose of tests (but does not provide interpretation or diagnoses to patient). - Administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications (including dilation), as directed by physician.
- Reviews the use of Amsler grid testing for at-home monitoring of macular changes.
- Set-up and assists physician with office-based surgical and injection procedures, including informed consent procedures/forms.
- Monitors and optimizes patient flow. Escorts patients from check-in area, to diagnostic testing area, to exam lanes, to check-out area/optical dispensary, as appropriate.
- Provides/reviews clinical education, pre- and post-op instructions, and prescription usage instructions as directed by treating MD/OD, in office and via phone.
- Maintains stock levels and cleanliness of exam lanes, at start of day, end of day and between patients. Identify supply needs and notify supply orderer as necessary.
- Cleans and disinfects equipment and lenses, ensures battery-powered instruments are properly seated to ensure strong charge, turns on (at start of day)/off (and end of day) slit lamps and projectors, and removes covers (start of day)/returns covers (end of day) on equipment. Troubleshoots equipment, i.e., change bulbs, batteries, fuses.
- Act as a scribe to physician by entering into EMR physician’s examination, diagnoses, treatment and/or treatment plan.
- Processes medication and spectacle/contact lens prescription refill requests, per doctor’s orders.
- Maintain and clean/sterilize surgical instruments used in office.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- One year experience in a healthcare setting, ophthalmology preferred, or successful completion of medical assistant program that would qualify the graduate to become certified as a CMA, RMA, CCMA or NCMA.
- Certified as CMA, RMA, CCMA or NCMA preferred.
- Strong communication, team-member and interpersonal skills.
- Well-organized, with strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA statutes/regulations, and policies/procedures.
- Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology, diseases, symptoms, medications and anatomy.
- Demonstrated computer literacy, proficient with practice’s EMR and EPM (Next Gen experience/proficiency preferred).
$23.00/hr
