960-Vehicle Maintenance -  Auto/Truck/Bus Tech

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Drives and operates all types of automotive equipment, heavy‑duty trucks and buses to determine malfunctions and perform repairs and maintains all types of automotive equipment.

Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction. Overhauls gas or diesel engines.

Installs new ignition systems, aligns front wheels, changes or recharges batteries and replaces and rebuilds transmissions and other parts.

Inspects, tests and aligns wheels and maintains electrical systems and controls in company vehicles. Examines protective guards, loose bolts and specified safety devices on vehicles, and makes adjustments.

Balances wheels to minimize wear on tires and rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals. Tunes up engine to maintain combustion control standards. Adjusts equipment to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicles inspections and safety standards.

Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired vehicles, trucks or buses to verify conformance to specifications.

Uses hoist wrenches, gauges, drills or grinders, or other specialized auto mechanic tools and equipment.

Continual on‑the‑job training will be required to successfully maintain classification level. Tests will cover all phases of mechanics. The testing will be administered and reviewed by the Transportation Manager or designated representative.

Regular Attendance Required. All duties performed on‑site for the Community.

- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains related records of maintenance and repair work. Keeps work area in a safe and orderly manner.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Trucks, cars, busses, utility vehicles, vehicle steam cleaner, hydraulic hoist, welding equipment and shop equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in an auto maintenance shop, exposure to fumes, exhaust, heat, dust, noise and normal outdoor elements.

DESIRABLE

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school and extensive mechanical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience that produces the following:

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of PC and applicable software programs.
  • Knowledge of electronics and their application in vehicles of all types.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy‑duty automotive and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of OBDII codes and their application.
  • Ability to read and write work‑related job instructions in English.
  • Ability to read and follow complex diagnostic procedure manuals.
  • Ability to weld and do some metal fabrication.
  • Ability to pass general mechanical and electrical skills and knowledge tests, both oral and written.
  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in mechanical repair work.
  • Skill in the use of diagnostic tools, lab scope, scanner, DVOM, engine analyzer, graphing multi‑meter and gas analyzer.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid Class B California driver's license.
  • Possession of ASE certificates in the following areas with a minimum of experience in diesel engine, airbrakes, and electrical engine performance:
