Fire Protection Plan Review Engineer

Position Summary

Perform functions to serve as the department’s Building & Plans Engineer – Fire Protection Plan Review, and enforces the EPCOT Building Code, for compliance with codes, state laws, and regulations, related to construction within the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (the District), making decisions for which there is little precedent.

• Serve as technical expert for design and code issues related to occupant life safety, fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, smoke management systems, and active/passive fire protection features of building construction.
• Review engineering reports and performance-based designs for fire protection systems, including review of fire modeling.
• Provide updates to the EPCOT Building Codes related to the field of fire protection engineering.
• Consult and advise applicants, design professionals and others regarding use and application of the EPCOT Building Codes, state codes, laws and regulations.
• Prepare or assists in the preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, and proposals. Prepare comprehensive reports and evaluate material testing data and submittals for the Building & Safety Manager.
• Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and related construction documents.
• Verify all administrative requirements related to permitting, licensing, site requirements and general scheduling are in compliance with code and District requirements.
• Receive and review comments related to EPCOT building code compliance and assist the Building & Safety Manager in code interpretations related to fire protection engineering.
• Coordinate and conduct visual inspections of properties during Annual Emergency Power Tests and safety systems testing. Identify any major issues that may present safety hazards.
• Attend all training and continuing education courses as required.

• Perform or assist with any operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.
• Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Demonstrable knowledge of engineering procedures.
• Broad knowledge of precedents and a good knowledge of principles and practices of related technical areas and construction practices of fire protection engineering.
• A current knowledge of industry or regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to fire protection engineering.
• Thorough knowledge of fire protection engineering techniques, the design of fire protection systems, and engineering and design calculations. Broad knowledge of the application of fire protection engineering as applied to construction methods and materials.
• Current knowledge of computer applications in engineering and design. Working knowledge of engineering, planning, and control methods including computerized methods.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, building owners and the general public.
• Ability to make decisions, recognizing established precedents and practices, and to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new problems.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and smartphones/tablets including Microsoft and Apple operating systems and file structures and Microsoft Word and Excel applications.
• Demonstrate knowledge of Fire and Building codes.
• Knowledge of fire modeling techniques.
• Ability to read plans and specifications and to determine their compliance with established rules and regulations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with the public.
• Some knowledge of the principles and practices of modern office management is required.
• Regular, dependable attendance required.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering.
• Minimum ten years of relevant Fire Protection design and engineering experience.
