DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
To provide the basic skills necessary for collection of blood samples through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques.
- The employee in this position will be cross-trained to perform other duties in the emergency department, including, but, may not be limited to, EKGs and simple patient transports.
Reports directly to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:- Performs blood collection procedures through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques.
- Performs other duties in the emergency department, including, but, may not be limited to, EKGs and simple patient transports when needed.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- One year experience as a hospital phlebotomist or graduate from Phlebotomy school.
- Basic computer skills; basic mathematic skills.
- National certification preferred.
- Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology and an in depth knowledge of specimen collection tools and techniques.
- Phlebotomists are able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and other health care professionals while performing their duties, which may also involve stressful situations.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear.
- The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
