Phlebotomist – Full Time

Lake Charles Memorial Health System is hiring a General Lab Phlebotomist.

The General Lab Phlebotomist collects clinical laboratory samples to be tested in the clinical laboratory. The General Lab Phlebotomist will collect blood samples through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques, urine samples, and other specialty collections.

Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology.

• Use and maintain mobile devices and Spectralink phones according to policy.
• Utilize departmental communication platforms.
• Meets blood culture contamination rate of < 1.0% (if applicable) and rejected specimen rate of < 2% (if applicable) using blood diversion devices.
• Utilize proper hand washing.
• Assist clerks with receiving specimens, answering the phone, and other duties when available.
• Meet established turnaround times for STAT, In AM, Timed, and routine orders.
• Practice methods of preventing infection during venipuncture/skin puncture.
• Utilize laboratory computer system, collection lists, kiosk system, and pending logs.
• Ensure proper collection for specimen integrity.
• Recognize anatomic regions and components of the circulatory system.
• Keep blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized.
• Perform specialized collection procedures including cross match blood cultures, glucose tolerance, urine drug screen, PKU/T4, and therapeutic phlebotomy.
• Ensure proper patient identification, using two unique identifiers.
• Perform blood collection procedures using skin (capillary) puncture and venipuncture.

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Two years of experience in a like or similar position is preferred.
• Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
• Advanced computer skills.
• Ability to communicate well with patients, family, peers, and medical personnel.
• Able to read and understand graphs and performance improvement data sheets.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• May be at risk for exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• Mental competence, alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements, clear and pleasant speaking abilities, accurate hearing, visual acuity, and emotional stability are essential.
