Patient Account Representative (Full Time)

OverviewThe Patient Account Representative will handle inbound and outbound calls from patients and insurance companies, provide accurate, professional information about accounts, benefits, and payments, update patient records, verify insurance eligibility and authorizations, and follow up on outstanding balances while complying with HIPAA guidelines and maintaining confidentiality.
Responsibilities- Manage all inbound and outbound customer calls in a timely manner.
- Accurately evaluate each account to determine required steps to resolve outstanding balances within the Patient Practice Management System.
- Answer phones with correct salutation and professionalism.
- Strong phone and verbal communication skills and active listening.
- De‑escalate situations involving dissatisfied customers, offering assistance and support.
- Explain insurance benefits and patient responsibilities.
- Apply appropriate payment guidelines and approach patients for payment plans or full payment.
- Obtain financial information from patients/guarantors to determine free‑care eligibility.
- Verify insurance eligibility, authorizations, and obtain authorizations when required.
- Manage insurance changes and requirements, ensuring current carrier information is maintained.
- Monitor accuracy, suitability, and totality of patient accounts.
- Follow up on accounts with outstanding balances appropriately.
- Document all calls, correspondence, and related activities to each patient’s account.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA guidelines and strict confidentiality.
- Demonstrate capacity to work under pressure and multitask at all levels.
- Maintain assigned tasks by ensuring timely completion.
- Research and update returned mail, patient demographics, and follow‑up dates.
- Identify and resolve patient billing complaints.
- Perform various collection actions including contacting patients by phone.
- Use claims software to check status of claim, submission history, and eligibility.
- Set priorities and manage time effectively to handle multiple responsibilities.
- High school graduate or GED certificate.
- At least one year experience in Healthcare or related field preferred.
- Keyboarding skills of 40 words per minute or higher; basic computer skills.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to discuss medical issues.
- Negotiation skills, assertiveness, and proactive attitude.
- Work requires a variety of physical activities, including traveling within and outside hospital properties for long periods of time.
- Respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non‑emergent situations.
- Assist in controlling disorderly conduct or combative patients when required.
- Exchange accurate information with patients, families, peers and medical personnel.
