Overview
This is the first of five levels in the Animal Care series at Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The incumbent cleans and sanitizes the animal shelter and provides care to the animals.
Responsibilities- Assign incoming animals to kennels.
- Administer medications and vaccinations.
- Assist in euthanizing animals, including surgical procedures for rabies testing.
- Prepare heads for rabies checks.
- Cremate animals as requested.
- Microchip animals.
- Clean kennels and public areas.
- Assist the public in selecting an animal and completing paperwork.
- Feed and water animals.
- Maintain records, reports, and files for animal care and adoption.
- Socialize animals in custody, monitor for illness, and evaluate adoption potential.
This position does not require supervisory responsibilities.
RequirementsEducation and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties.
Licensing Requirements
Valid driver’s license as required by state law.

Typical duties include reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Frequently, employees will be required to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, or 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
Work EnvironmentEmployees may be exposed to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather, extreme heat, animal bites, repugnant odors and sights, and potential exposure to animal‑borne diseases and blood‑borne pathogens. Noise levels are usually very loud, and employees may occasionally work in high, precarious places or in extreme cold and risk of electrical shock.
UniformEmployees in this position will be supplied with a uniform provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and must abide by the Police Jury’s Uniform Agreement.
Other InformationThis position is not eligible for the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury benefit package.
