Summary

Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for work of a skilled nature.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Record meter readings for all locations on assigned routes and calculate consumption.

Investigate and report locations with unusual readings, check for leaks, other meter problems, or unauthorized usage.

Locate and repair leaks around meters and clearly define location of leak for possible bill adjustments to customer.

Checked assigned vehicle for fluid levels, lights, tires, and cleanliness to assure safety and prevent potential problems.

Read and interpret specification and plans. Make material and supply estimates.

Plan for material and work schedules before job. Expedite work orders from Superintendents.

Keep records when required and make reports when necessary.

Responsible for any of the following tasks:

Apply coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel, lacquer, etc. to decorate and/or protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimming and fixtures of buildings, offices, rooms, and other structures.

Smoothing surfaces using sandpaper, brushes, or steel wool; removing old paint using paint remover, scraper, wire brush, or blow torch; fill nail holes, cracks, joints with putty, plaster, or other fillers; select pre-mixed paints or mix paint; paint surfaces using hand brush, spray gun, or paint rollers.

Install, maintain, and repair water, sewerage, and gas systems.

Install and repair pipes, valves, drains, basins, tubes, faucet, laboratories, sinks, gates, hydrant, water coolers, dishwasher, and other plumbing fixtures and equipment.

Repair old plumbing; replace broken parts, fixtures, pipelines, renewing pipes and valves.

Clean and open drains and other lines.

Repair and make minor adjustments to steam pumps and regulators, air compressors, water pumps, and heaters, automatic stoker, and steam tables.

May be responsible for moderate level welding projects.

Proficiently use a radio signal transmitter/receiver pipe and cable locator to trace and mark mains, feeder, meter, etc.

Use metal detector or magnetic dip needle to locate valve boxes. Supervise other employees of the work crew.

Drive and/or operate equipment such as a chain saw, concrete breaker, flat bed dump truck and six-yard dump truck, as well as equipment listed under Operator II, if needed.

Perform work of a skilled level associated with concrete finishing for purposes of street and sidewalk repair; and may be required to finish concrete for the construction of ramps, retaining walls, floors, foundations, driveways, etc.; and will lay wire mesh and reinforcement.

Must be able to perform duties of a Trades Worker I & II.

Perform any other assigned duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May be responsible for supervisory duties of Trades Worker I and II in crew.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Ability to be on 24 hour call.

Working knowledge of meters, valves, gas and diesel engines, and location equipment; and operation of jack hammers, power saws, tapping and boring machine.

Must know the flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM) for the different meter sizes in the system.

Must know the severity of any type of leak in the system in order to report whether it needs repair immediately or later. Must be capable of identifying and reporting the exact location of the leak in relation to the side of the street, the nearest intersection, and the street address.

General knowledge of geographical layout of the City, i.e. street locations, water mains, service lines.

Ability to use independent judgment concerning maintenance and repairs.

Good eye-hand coordination and good form and space perception.

Ability to effectively communicate with other employees; and to read and comprehend instructions.

Knowledge of painting techniques and processes.

Ability to use independent judgment concerning maintenance and repairs.

Ability to effectively communicate with other employees, and to comprehend instructions.

Skilled in use and care of tools and equipment of plumbing maintenance.

Knowledge of plumbing maintenance and repair procedures and equipment. Knowledge of application of a variety of plumbing equipment.

Regular prompt attendance is an essential function to this position.

The ability to get along and promote a harmonious working environment with vendors, supervisors, citizens, and co-workers is an essential function of this position.

Education and/or Experience
