GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs general grounds maintenance duties including preparation of walking trails and fields at assigned city and park sites, and basic maintenance tasks in city right-of-way including vegetation control, asphalt, concrete, gravel, and drainage repairs. Operates a range of small powered and specialized equipment. Provides support for special events. May perform duties of similar complexity in other maintenance areas as required or assigned.
Because of the small size of the city staff, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of field duties as required from time to time.
This is a seasonal full-time, non-exempt position. Work schedule is typically day shift, Monday - Friday; occasional evening or weekend work may be required. Seasonal Maintenance Workers may work up to six months during peak season/maintenance activities. Work schedule and duration will be discussed further with new hires. Perform routine tasks such as weeding, raking, watering, hand mowing, edging, shoveling, litter pick-up, cleaning and repairing trails, grounds and other public facilities.
Assist other employees in other park, building, and right-of-way repair tasks.
Education and Experience
Required:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent AND equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Valid Washington State Drivers License required by date of hire; must be able to maintain a clean driving record.
- Ability to obtain Flagging Card and First Aid Certification.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability and interest in outdoor park maintenance work in all types of weather.
Preferred:
- Experience in maintenance or other related work preferred.
- Working knowledge of computers, administrative office procedures, methods and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Courteous and respectful interactions with other employees, members of the public, vendors, and others.
- Learn general principles of landscape and walking trail and field maintenance, including turf, shrubs and trees commonly used in park landscaping.
- Learn general principles of right-of-way maintenance including concrete, asphalt, drainage repairs and vegetation control.
- Identify work hazards and practice general safety procedures.
- Interact with the public in an effective, customer-friendly manner.
- Maintain regular, predictable and reliable attendance during scheduled hours.
- Communicate information in English effectively verbally and in writing.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work independently without direct supervision in the field.
- Safely operate light-duty trucks, hand mowers and a variety of hand tools used in park and right-of-way maintenance.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Equipment such as, but not limited to, push and riding mowers, power edger, hand and backpack blowers, string trimmers, chain saws and pole saws, ladders of various sizes and configurations, and powered and non-powered hand tools.

Duties are performed primarily outdoors in a variety of terrains, under a variety of weather conditions, including sun, rain, wind, and mud. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of maintenance equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid or hot conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
