OverviewThe Thermal Simulation Engineer will be located at Alcon’s R&D site in Lake Forest, CA. The role focuses on developing computational models and simulations to assess medical device performance, supporting virtual prototyping, product design, and regulatory activities for ophthalmic surgical consoles and diagnostic systems.
Key Responsibilities- Perform advanced thermal management modeling of electronics assemblies, leveraging conjugate heat transfer concepts.
- Lead simulation projects using Icepak, FloEFD, and Ansys Workbench, ensuring convergence and model accuracy.
- verify simulation results against experimental data, collaborating with testing teams.
- Define simulation scope, requirements, and objectives, and present findings to cross‑functional product teams.
- Provide technical guidance to mechanical and electrical engineers early in the design cycle to mitigate thermal issues.
- Develop and validate new simulation methods, incorporating AI/ML acceleration techniques when appropriate.
- Prepare professional analysis reports and manage multiple concurrent projects.
- BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Biomedical Engineering with coursework in Conjugate Heat Transfer and CFD.
- Minimum 5 years (BS) or 1+ year (MS) of industry experience in thermal simulation and analysis for product development.
- Expert proficiency in Icepak, FloEFD, Ansys Workbench, Design Modeler, and fluency in CAD simplification using Creo and Solid Works.
- Strong knowledge of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermal system testing.
- Experience with AI/ML techniques and surrogate modeling for simulation acceleration.
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience (high school +10 yrs; Associate +6 yrs; MS +0 yrs).
- 2+ years of relevant experience.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.
