Job Description

The Nurse Clinician works in a multidisciplinary environment. The role requires exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians and other clinical and administrative units. The nurse clinician performs patient assessments via phone or in person and implements nursing interventions, using sound judgment, independent thinking and creativity when resolving patient care issues. The position also initiates and organizes patient education for the unit’s population.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations; report deficiencies and assist in rectification.
  • Provide pre‑attending care for patients, performing comprehensive assessments, offering opinions to physicians, and documenting all nursing assessments in the medical record.
  • Perform routine nursing duties (phlebotomy, medication administration, vital signs, lab specimen preparation) and demonstrate competency in complex specialty‑related procedures such as conscious sedation, chemotherapy administration, inseminations, implantable pain pump adjustment, and wound excision/drainage.
  • Interpret abnormalities detected in tests and procedures and take appropriate remedial action, documenting all interventions.
  • Collaborate with other clinical and administrative departments and outside agencies as needed to coordinate patient care.
  • Triage incoming telephone calls, document assessments, and prioritize based on clinical assessment skills and service standards.
  • Manage urgent/emergent medical situations in accordance with the organization’s protocols and operate emergency equipment as required.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and physicians for problem solving and decision‑making, delegating tasks in accordance with Illinois law and organizational protocols.
  • Comply with all existing policies and procedures related to patient care, recommending new policies that may improve the patient experience.
  • Initiate and coordinate patient education, ensuring understanding and providing teaching to staff and community outreach programs.
Qualifications Required
  • Associate’s degree in Nursing
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • State‑licensed Registered Nurse in the state of employment
  • Basic CPR certification
  • At least 2 years of relevant clinical experience in an acute or ambulatory care environment
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (may be required for certain positions)
