Clinical Shift Coordinator RN-Neuro/Ortho Full Time Nights

Salary range: $38.50 - $61.60 hourly. Placement within the range depends on relevant work experience, internal equity, and collective bargaining agreement for union‑represented positions.

Description

Clinical Shift Coordinator is a registered nurse who prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care to hospitalized patients through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The role functions in a leadership capacity, overseeing daily unit operations, staff, and care delivery while maintaining ANA standards of professional practice.

  • Maintain awareness of unstable, complex, or high‑risk patient conditions throughout the shift.
  • Ensure appropriate assignment of care based on staff competency and patient acuity.
  • Coordinate and monitor patient care to ensure safety.
  • Collect, analyze, and organize patient care data for the unit.
  • Ensure staff compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Adapt services to reflect age, culture, gender, race, nationality, and religion.
  • Oversee documentation of key critical elements for patient care and national patient safety goals.
  • Ensure initial admit orders are received by the end of shift.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of staffing requirements and consult with manager on variances.
  • Oversee accurate completion of daily charges to capture appropriate revenue.
  • Support unit cost effectiveness initiatives (LOS, HPPD, OT, flexible staffing).
  • Document staffing information and justifications in Optilink each shift.
  • Check staff timekeeping and enforce time‑and‑attendance policies.
  • Report shift occurrences to Nursing leadership and risk management.
  • Ensure compliance with patient life‑safety standards (fire safety, handwashing, crash cart checks).
  • Accurately track unit equipment.
  • Demonstrate effective oral, written, and listening skills with staff, physicians, patients, and families.
  • Maintain chain‑of‑command accountability and timely communication.
  • Complete leader rounding consistently on assigned staff.
  • Assist with staff meeting organization and conduct staff huddles.
  • Collaborate with educator and manager for orientation of new staff; assign preceptors and schedules.
  • Participate in unit and PCS‑based teams, committees, or shared‑governance councils.
  • Inform staff of unit initiatives and integrate outcomes into practice.
  • Ensure RN’s and PC’s work collaboratively and take uninterrupted meal breaks.
  • Coordinate patient placement with Clinical Placement Nurse.
  • Promote a welcoming spirit for the unit, including students and resource teams.
  • Develop functional relationships with other units/physicians and maintain a hospital‑wide perspective.
  • Promote collective accountability for the unit/department.
  • Conduct weekend leadership rounding and assist Clinical Manager during the week.
  • Contribute to annual employee performance evaluations and attend when scheduled.
