Job SummaryPosition works with students, parents/guardians, teachers, other district personnel and professionals in other agencies regarding student educational and career goals, student attendance, student behavior and discipline, healthy lifestyle choices, and appropriate peer and social interactions and related issues. This position also provides social and emotional support for students as it relates to the school setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Develops the district’s high school guidance and counseling program which promotes social, emotional, academic, behavioral skills, and academic achievement.
- Assists in the coordination and implementation of the school’s group testing programs and registration/class scheduling process. Assists in scheduling and administering general student group tests.
- Assists students in defining long‑range and short‑range educational goals including course selection, preparation for college and other post‑secondary education/training opportunities.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) framework and implements the ASCA model to provide a comprehensive school counseling program.
- Support students’ social‑emotional development by promoting self‑awareness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills, while collaborating with teachers and families to implement SEL strategies that enhance student well‑being and success.
- Maintains school rules and standards of student behavior for a safe and productive learning environment. Works with the principal, school staff, and parents regarding individual student behavior and discipline issues.
- Works with students, parents, school staff, and the administration in developing and maintaining satisfactory student attendance and exploring alternative education settings/programs.
- Observes, evaluates and refers students who need additional services and support.
- Case Manager for 504 plans.
- Interprets group test data to students and parents including achievement tests, aptitude tests, and interest surveys.
- Works with parents, students, teachers, and other staff members to familiarize them with services offered by counselors.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying conflict management and dispute resolution techniques.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
- Has consistent, daily and punctual attendance.
- Operates various office equipment including audio‑visual equipment/devices, telephones and photocopy machines.
- Attends in‑service trainings, staff meetings and other meetings as assigned. Attends professional growth activities related to job responsibilities.
- Provides staff development activities for staff during in‑service meetings, including positive communication, human relations, adolescent growth and development and student discipline/guidance.
- Serves on building and district committees and councils as assigned.
- Communicates information about district, school and/or departmental policies and procedures to students, staff, parents and patrons.
- Supervises students on school grounds, on field trips and at various school functions.
- Assists teachers with guidance units as assigned.
- Reports issues to the principal and the appropriate authorities including safety, sanitary and fire hazards, vandalism, thefts and errant wildlife.
- Consistently follows all applicable federal and state laws and all district policies, rules and supervisor directions.
- Observes ergonomics of sedentary office work including placement of computers and monitors, and sitting alignment.
- Observes proper lifting techniques and other strategies to avoid accidents and personal injury while performing job duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
