General Summary & Scope

The Assistant Stylist engages with guests, consults on hair needs, and recommends products and services. It is a temporary position preparing talent for a stylist role, delivering quality professional services with an emphasis on the guest’s total look. The first three months are mentored by an Elite or Master Stylist; months four‑six focus on performance, people, and process. This role demands passion for beauty, exceptional guest service, and a willingness to learn technical skills and product knowledge.

Performance

• Deliver exceptional guest service and contribute to meeting or exceeding the store’s goals related to retail and service sales, guest loyalty, and retail shrink.
• Support the mentor Stylist in achieving sales and productivity goals for hair services and hair‑care products:
• Add‑on recommendations
• Shampoo and treatment process
• Blowouts and styling
• Global and retouch color applications
• Assisting with foils (e.g., folding/handing foils)
• Cleaning/sanitation and organizing duties
• Pre‑booking
• Retail recommendations
• After month three, perform hair services (hair design, haircuts, color, texture, treatments, styling, up‑dos, perms, blowouts, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup applications, and ear piercing where applicable).
• Perform product demonstrations to drive sales and enhance guest experience.
• Support in‑store events, promotions, and marketing initiatives.
• Stay informed on new and existing industry trends, products, and services during work time.
• Maintain prompt, regular attendance.

People

• Develop guest relationships through consultations and tailored recommendations.
• Serve all guests, including walk‑ins, efficiently under mentorship.
• Collaborate with skin therapists and the retail team for a comprehensive guest experience.
• Establish professional partnerships that foster collaborative exceptional service.
• Share benefits of the guest loyalty program, including credit and the Ulta Beauty app.

Process

• Be knowledgeable of and ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards.
• Follow safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures before, during, and after services.
• Follow established service protocols to ensure a consistent and exceptional guest experience.
• Utilize booking and clientele systems for return services and events.
• Communicate supply needs to the Experience Manager.
• Maintain outstanding store operational standards—salon, salesfloor, restrooms, backroom, break area, and any assigned area.
• Attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
• Adhere to the Ulta Beauty dress code.
• Protect company assets by following loss prevention best practices.
• Execute other operational tasks as directed.

Education

• Cosmetology license

Skills

• Basic understanding of salon techniques (cutting, coloring, lightening, styling, texture, treatment, extensions, makeup, ear piercing) and a readiness to develop all service categories.
• Basic understanding of equipment and chemicals needed for technical work.
• Basic understanding to demonstrate, recommend, and sell professional hair‑care and makeup products.
• Developed communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and clientele.

Special Position Requirements

• Work a flexible schedule containing days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
