This position performs highly skilled work in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel powered vehicles and equipment in the Village fleet. Work involves the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs on automobiles, medium and heavy-duty trucks, firefighting apparatus, ambulances, police vehicles, construction equipment, snow plows, and other specialized equipment and small machinery. This position is responsible for performing the most complex repairs and requires only occasional instruction or assistance to complete tasks.

Works closely with other Village departments to coordinate maintenance and repairs and requires a considerable amount of self-initiative and independent judgment.

Compensation: $70,304 plus comprehensive benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance, 3 weeks paid vacation accrual after the first year, sick, personal, and holiday leave, and participation in the IMRF pension fund.

Job Description

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, trucks, fire equipment, police vehicles, construction equipment (such as loaders, backhoes, pavers, rollers, skid steers), specialty equipment (such as snow plows, street sweepers, sewer flushers, log loaders, bucket trucks), and small equipment (such as generators, pumps, chippers, mowers).
  • Services and repairs engines, hydraulic and air brakes, ignition and lighting systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; hydraulic controls, heating, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems; and other mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components.
  • Maintains diesel emission control systems and related components.
  • Installs and maintains snow and ice control equipment such as plows, salt spreaders and liquid deicing chemical tanks.
  • Maintains accurate repair records using fleet management software (currently Computerized Fleet Analysis – CFA).
  • Installs and maintains radios, emergency lighting, sirens, radars, video equipment and other emergency equipment.
  • Responds to emergency road calls.
  • Assists in training other employees on proper equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Assists with snow plowing and ice control operations.
  • Maintains availability on-call to respond to emergency situations.
  • Maintains cleanliness of shop and functionality of shop equipment.
  • Assists with other department functions as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery such as heavy-duty trucks, end loaders, bucket trucks, pavers and rollers, excavating equipment, post installers and removers, hand and power tools and mowers. Ability to operate various types of shop equipment such as lifts, hoists, welders, torches, plasma cutters and tire equipment. Ability to maintain and repair complex equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment used in the operation, maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment including gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel engines and mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation and repair methods applicable to heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and use diagnostic software including but not limited to Ford IDS, FDRS, Cummins Insight and Bosch ESI.
