Overview

The Village of Lake Zurich, Illinois is located in southwestern Lake County approximately 37 miles from downtown Chicago. Lake Zurich is a full service community with many residential neighborhoods, restaurants and shopping opportunities, great schools and recreation. The Village of Lake Zurich has an immediate need for qualified candidates for the position of Auxiliary Crossing Guard. The Auxiliary Crossing Guard will report directly to the Traffic Safety Division Sergeant and will be required to guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at school crossings.

Auxiliary Crossing Guards are used on an as-needed, relief basis to cover absences of regular crossing guards. Potential transfer to a regular crossing guard may become possible.

• Stops and directs traffic to ensure the safety of school children and other pedestrians crossing at designated intersections
• Signals to pedestrians indicating when streets are safe to cross
• Guides and assists children and other pedestrians across intersections
• Maintains order among children as they approach the intersection
• Applies appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and uses clear and proper traffic management signals to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic
• Monitors traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets
• Directs traffic movement or warns of hazards using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals
• Warns individuals about rule violations or safety concerns
• Communicates traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults
• Reports unsafe behavior of children to school officials
• Distributes traffic control signs and markers at designated points
• Records license plates of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to appropriate authorities
• Communicates with Traffic Safety Division Sergeant to report any information, problems, or concerns regarding the school zone where crossing guard services are performed
• Ability to deal effectively and courteously with associates, Community Unit School District 95 staff, and the general public
• Adheres to program policies, procedures, and safe work practices
• Performs other job duties as assigned by the Traffic Safety Division Sergeant
