We are seeking a Building Inspector/Plans Examiner who balances technical mastery with a service‑oriented mindset to ensure building, zoning and related codes, policies and ordinances are enforced and administered. In this role, you will be the city’s primary liaison for safe construction, ensuring that every project—from home renovations to commercial developments—meets the highest standards of safety and compliance.

What You’ll Do
  • Inspections & Enforcement:
    Perform comprehensive field inspections of new and existing structures, including specialized checks on plumbing, HVAC, and sewer systems.
  • Plan Review:
    Analyze site plans, surveys, and permit applications to ensure alignment with City Zoning Ordinances and grading requirements.
  • Consultative Support:
    Serve as a technical resource for architects, contractors, and homeowners, helping them achieve compliance through clear communication of code requirements.
  • Investigation & Resolution:
    Address property maintenance complaints and site‑plan violations, taking necessary actions to secure corrections and maintain community standards.
  • Process Management:
    Maintain digital records using our automated permit system to keep the Division running smoothly.

Anticipated starting salary range: $40.54 - $43.64, DOQ
2026 salary range is $40.54 - $52.46

  • Conduct inspections on all permitted construction work involving new and existing structures to assure work is performed consistent with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Identify and advise permit applicant of specific code deficiencies.
  • Advise permit applicant of appropriate correction methods.
  • Review corrective actions to assure that violations have been corrected in a timely fashion.
  • Review building/improvement plans involving all aspects of construction for compliance with the applicable codes and City Zoning Ordinance.
  • Review permit applications to assure that they accurately reflect work anticipated and correct inconsistencies when found.
  • Disseminate information to clientele of the Building Inspection Division regarding City ordinances, zoning requirements and permit requirements and costs.
  • Review site plans and/or surveys for residential construction projects to verify compliance with grading plans and City Zoning Ordinances.
  • Maintain daily inspection and related records in an up-to-date and orderly fashion to expedite division record‑keeping procedures.
  • Use automated permit issuance system to enter inspection results and obtain permit information.
  • Assist contractors, architects, homeowners and others in understanding and conforming to construction codes.
  • Investigate complaints filed with the City and take appropriate action to secure correction of problem.
  • Investigate and collect data regarding complaints involving property maintenance code.
  • Prepare inspection reports when necessary to invoke legal action.
  • Perform plumbing, heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning and sewer and water inspections as needed.
  • Remain familiar with new materials, equipment, methods of construction, and changes in the code, to assure that building codes are administered in a fair and effective manner.
  • Keep fellow inspectors and Building Official advised of significant information necessary for the satisfactory completion of division affairs.
  • Review new or substitute materials used in construction and make recommendation for acceptance or rejections.
  • Assist other departments with enforcement of erosion control, tree preservation, landscaping and trash containment policies on construction sites.
  • Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to assist builders by relating codes to their projects and thereby achieving compliance.
  • Knowledge of new construction materials and practices.
  • Ability to understand and interpret the City Code and Ordinances.
  • Complete understanding of residential and commercial construction
  • Must have demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with developers, contractors, owners, architects and general public.
