The City of Lakeville is looking for a versatile Engineering Technician to join our team. This role offers the perfect blend of high-level AutoCAD design and hands‑on field work, giving you the opportunity to see interesting and challenging municipal projects from the first topographic survey to the final construction inspection.

What You’ll Do
  • Design & Draft
    :
    Use AutoCAD to develop roadway alignments, surface models, and detailed cross‑sections for vital public infrastructure.
  • Field Operations
    :
    Perform topographic surveys, construction staking and as‑built surveys ensuring projects are built to plan and city specifications.
  • On‑Site Inspection
    :
    Act as the City’s eyes and ears on construction sites, ensuring contractors meet safety and quality standards while managing pay vouchers and project records.
  • Public Liaison
    :
    Communicate project impacts clearly to residents and business owners, ensuring the community stays informed and engaged.

2026 Salary Range is $36.08‑46.69

Design
  • Design roadway and public infrastructure improvements using AutoCAD by establishing line and grade and developing cross‑sections.
  • Draft and edit specifications for municipal improvement projects in conformance with City standard specifications and policies.
  • Develop surface terrain models of existing and proposed conditions using AutoCAD.
  • Assist with preparation of bidding documents for public roads, trails, utilities, and other public infrastructure projects.
  • Complete preliminary designs, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates and prepare engineering reports to assist in the planning and implementation of projects.
Survey
  • Assist with and/or gather preliminary and topographic surveys.
  • Assist with and/or provide construction control and stake as needed to provide contractors with information required to construct public improvements as laid out in the plans.
  • Locate and/or identify property irons, check GIS database and legal descriptions for easements, assessments, property splits and other related matters.
Inspection
  • Assist with and/or performs construction administration on municipal projects, provide on‑site inspection to ensure that all work is constructed in conformance with the plans and specifications and City standards.
  • Assist with and/or maintains accurate record keeping, pay voucher development and other documentation and reports as associated with municipal projects. This could include municipal state aid and/or federal aid funded projects.
  • Ability to function as a liaison between the public, businesses, small utilities, contractors and City personnel.
  • Assist with the City’s Pavement Management Program. This includes annual pavement inspection and data collection for the City’s streets, parking lots and trail systems.

Performs other work as required and assigned.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
  • Must be capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co‑workers, contractors, public agencies, consultants and the general public.
  • Problem solving and decision‑making skills must be used to address the needs of the work while knowing when to enlist direction from their immediate supervisor when appropriate.
  • The employee must have sufficient strength, mobility, and agility to perform frequent field survey and construction inspection work including: repetitive bending, stooping, and kneeling; ability to reach with hands and arms; long periods of walking and standing; lifting and carrying necessary equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; use of hands to handle equipment, tools, and objects; ability to traverse areas of uneven or excavated ground and steep…
