Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer - Welding

Reports To: Engineering Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

The Manufacturing Engineer for Welding develops, implements, and improves welding processes to ensure consistent weld quality, efficient production, and reliable product performance. This role works closely with production, engineering, quality, and maintenance teams to support manual and robotic welding, introduce new products, and maintain controlled welding procedures and manufacturing documentation.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop welding methods, process parameters, welding sequences, and standard work instructions for repeatable production.
  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder qualification records as required.
  • Design, procure, or modify weld fixtures, tooling, and equipment to improve fit-up, access, repeatability, and distortion control.
  • Conduct welding time studies and analyze defects, rework, consumable use, and cycle times to identify improvements.
  • Train shop floor personnel on welding procedures, equipment setup, weld requirements, and revised processes.
  • Support Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and 5S in welding operations.
  • Install and validate welding equipment and processes; support procedure qualification and production trials with quality personnel.
  • Collaborate with product development teams on weld joint design, materials, tolerances, and manufacturability.
  • Create and manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for welding processes, tooling, and production documentation.
  • Validate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and routings to reflect welding methods, consumables, and processing times.
  • Troubleshoot weld defects and distortion; coordinate corrective actions and inspection requirements with quality and production.
  • Follow applicable welding requirements, safety practices, and quality standards; support the quality policy and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Welding, Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering.
  • A minimum of three years of manufacturing experience with welding processes, or a combination of relevant experience and advanced engineering education.
  • Working knowledge of welding metallurgy, weld symbols, joint design, distortion control, and relevant welding processes such as GMAW and GTAW.
  • Experience with WPS and PQR documentation, weld qualification, inspection methods, and applicable customer welding requirements; AWS certification preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and proficiency in Lean manufacturing, CAD (preferably Solid Works), ERP (preferably Global Shop Solutions), and Microsoft Office.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally as part of job duties.
  • May involve extended periods of standing, walking, bending, or stooping.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate tools, equipment, or computers.
  • Work involves time spent in both an office setting and on the production floor.
  • Regular interaction with cross-functional teams, including product development, quality assurance, and shop floor personnel.
  • Hands‑on work with equipment, tooling, and production processes to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Exposure to typical manufacturing environments, including noise, heat, or dust, with appropriate safety protocols in place.
  • Flexibility is required to address production challenges and meet project deadlines.
