Job Description

The Division of Energy, Matter and Systems (EMS) in the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) seeks applications for a tenure‑track/tenure‑eligible faculty position in materials science at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or full Professor level to start in Fall 2026. EMS is the largest and most academically diverse division in SSE, offering programs in Chemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics & Astronomy, and developing new programs in Materials Science and Engineering and Sustainable Energy Technologies.

The new faculty will play an essential role in the MSE and SET programs and join a team that has secured multi‑million dollar grants from NSF, DOD, NIH, and DOE.

Areas of interest for the Tenure‑Track/Tenure‑Eligible Position

Candidates with expertise in emerging domains of materials and energy sciences that can extend our sponsored research program and secure external funding are encouraged. Areas of interest include nanomaterials, energy materials, electronic, optical and magnetic (EOM) materials, intelligent and smart materials, metamaterials, and circular materials. We seek scholars who aim to address fundamental challenges in materials research that are a federal funding priority.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and sustain an extramurally funded research program.
  • Commit to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in materials science and related areas.
  • Engage in discipline, division, school, or university services appropriate to the position.
  • Advance the goals and strategic plans of SSE and UMKC.
Qualifications All Candidates

Must hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Sciences and Engineering, or a related field.

Associate Professor

Should have all qualifications of an Assistant Professor, plus successful grant applications/extramural funding, peer‑reviewed publications, mentorship of graduate students or postdoctoral fellows, and strong student evaluations from didactic teaching at their current or previous position.

Full Professor

Should meet all qualifications above and be career‑advanced with an established reputation in their respective field.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, experience and evidence of success in externally funded research. This is a 9‑month, benefit‑eligible, full‑time (1.0) appointment eligible for tenure and promotion.
