About the Division of Youth Services

The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non‑residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21 who are pre‑adjudicated, sentenced, or committed.

It also contracts with private residential and non‑residential service providers throughout the State. DYS manages the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum and administers juvenile parole services across Colorado.

Summary of this position

This work unit provides academic, vocational, and workforce readiness education in conjunction with life‑skills and social‑emotional learning to youth in institutional facilities. It offers professional consultation to community programs serving DYS youth and collaborates with other state and community agencies that provide, supplement or monitor education services.

The teacher conducts classroom instruction in English Language Arts and Humanities, including Social‑Emotional Learning topics and careers, for committed youth in a safe and trauma‑informed environment. The teacher is responsible for knowledge of current state standards in English Language Arts, technology instruction, and related subjects, including best practices and research in teaching and learning. The position may provide instruction to secondary and post‑secondary youth.

Job Duties
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate classroom setting using effective classroom management skills and engagement strategies to meet student needs, including implementation of the PBIS system.
  • Assess new and continuing students using multiple assessment methods and collect evidence of learning.
  • Prepare unit lesson plans and daily plans aligned with state standards and the critical skills needed; design and implement a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student progress that correlate to standards‑based education with appropriate rigor.
  • Implement research‑based education strategies (including technology) to accommodate multi‑age/multi‑level students.
  • Ensure that the DYS instructional framework is followed with daily learning objectives and relevant learning and appropriate assessments while meeting the needs of all youth; use the instructional model.
  • Maintain accurate educational records in IC and/or Trails and meet deadlines; use these skills for subbing in other classrooms as required.
  • Use technology appropriately to design, upload information and lessons while taking attendance and grading work.
  • Meet informally and in scheduled meetings with Central Education Office members, principal, treatment providers and other teachers to review student and school progress.
  • Develop comprehensive plans for implementation of the subject matter in line with education goals and school development plans and quality standards.
  • Participate in professional and staff safety development and apply learning accordingly, assuring appropriate boundaries and effective presentation.
  • Use data effectively with MTSS processes, progress monitoring, educational advocacy, and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT); provide monthly reviews of content to principal.
  • Assist in the safety and security of the school and facility by supervising residents and providing immediate assistance as needed.
  • Adhere to safety procedures, trauma‑informed culture, Motivational Interviewing, Sanctuary Model, small group processes, Restorative Justice language, and frameworks.
  • Follow the Code of Conduct and professional norms of behavior; adhere to leave policy and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and License Requirement
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education or a field related to the work assignment.
  • Valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
