Description Of JobThe Criminal Investigator III provides investigative, regulatory enforcement, and educational support to maintain compliance with Colorado firearms laws across the state. The position requires analytical reporting, courtroom testimony, outreach training, and field inspections.
Primary Duties- Conduct investigations of firearms dealer violations, prepare investigative reports, and testifies in administrative and criminal proceedings.
- Interview witnesses, suspects, applicants, and the public; collect evidence and maintain records in the evidence tracking system.
- Make arrests when necessary and enforce statutes as an armed peace officer.
- Respond to complaints, perform inspections, and assist permit tees with corrective action.
- Document work time, communicate with staff, attend required training, and maintain certifications.
- Prepare reports and documents that support departmental policy and decision‑making.

Minimum Qualifications- Six (6) years of full‑time professional investigative experience in a regulatory environment,
* and* a valid Colorado POST certification. - OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related field + two (2) years investigative experience + valid Colorado POST certification.
- Criminal investigative experience may be substituted for the degree on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Must possess a valid Colorado postal order highway (POST) certification.
- Must be able to pass a background investigation, tax check, physical and psychological evaluation.
- Must maintain valid Colorado driver’s license.
- Must be willing to work nights, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and maintain on‑call status.
- Must perform heavy lifting up to 100 pounds as needed.
- Knowledge of Colorado firearms regulations.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Experience supervising regulatory investigations.
- Problem‑solving and organizational skills.
- Experience with rule‑making processes.
- Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must pass a background check and, if required, a pre‑employment drug screen.
- Travel as required.
